After lurking for weeks on these boards I figure it's time to come out and start contributing back. My family is headed to WDW next week. I'll drag the laptop along and try to keep a trip report going. First, a little about our family.

I'm Rob. A 39 year old Dad. My wife Evelyn (39), son Evan (8) and daughter Chloe (5). Also coming along are my mother-in-law Lorraine and sister-in-law Susan. Having a grandma and an aunt along will greatly help in dealing with our two kids. Evan is autistic (high-functioning & sensory integration disorder). Chole isn't diagnosed yet but is probably borderline ADHD. I myself probably have some form of adult Aspergers (self-diagnosed only at this point). My wife does yeoman's work keeping us all together. :-)

We live in Apex, NC and are flying RDU to MCO April 22. My wife's family is flying BOS to MCO later and arriving about an hour after us. I reserved Mears cars for each party to meet us at baggage claim. We'll se how well *that* goes. :)

The car will take us to Disney's Coronado Springs Resort (CSR) in the early afternoon on Sunday. We'll settle in, throw the kids in the pool, wait for Meme (pronounced MEH-mey; french version of grandma) and Auntie Sue. Begin drinking at the pool bar.

We have reservations made for Sunday evening at Wolfgang Puck's Downstairs in Downtown Disney. Figured we'd head over there and get some shopping done and just unwind from the flight.

The goal of this trip is to relax and have fun and let the kids enjoy themselves. The last time we went to Disney, Evan was 5 and had not yet been diagnosed with Autism. At the time we were at our wits' end wondering why he couldn't behave himself and "be normal". Now we are well versed in all things Autism. The key to having a peaceful time is to just accept that Evan processes things differently than neurotypicals. We just need to take things slowly and be flexible. Much of the time others can't even tell that anything is wrong with our son. Until something sets off a meltdown. Our goal is to avoid meltdowns by not getting into stressful situations that set them off.

To that end we will NOT be first in line at anything; we will not be staying for the fireworks; we will not wait on any 1 hour plus lines; we WILL go back to the resort when the kids get tired and just want ot play in the pool. We will try each park, but if the kids say they want to play in the wave pool at Typhoon Lagoon every day then we will do that. Flexibility is key.

With these goals in mind I did make some Advance Dining Reservations (ADRs). But we will remain flexible and walk away from any of these if they're not working out and go eat in the food court at the hotel if we that's what works out better.

Now, *that* said, I'm a complete chowhound. A "foodie" if you will. Love to eat good food. So I'm hoping we'll get to try out some interesting things. To that end, I've made the following reservations and am remaining optimistic we'll get to try them.

Sunday - Downtown Disney - Wolfgang Pucks Downstairs
Monday - Magic Kingdom - Spoodles @ Boardwalk
Tuesday - Blizzard Beach and/or Typhoon Lagoon - Maya @ CSR
Wednesday - Epcot - LeCellier lunch; Marakesh dinner
Thursday - MGM - Sci-Fi Very late lunch which we will think of as dinner (3:45)
Friday - Animal Kingdom - Boma @ Animal Kingdom Lodge (AKL)
Saturday - Fly back to RDU

In 2004 we stayed at AKL but didn't get a chance to try Boma. We still may not as AKL is a bit out of the way. If we wind up bailing on AK and go to a water park instead we'll have to plan something different.

My MIL absolutely wants to try Le Cellier as she has friends that raved about it. Personally, to me it looks like a steakhouse and you can get that anywhere. When working with the ADR agent he explained that "EPCOT World Showcase is all about exploring new worlds; trying new things; but what do Americans do? Go eat at what's familiar -- a steakhouse." He said it's very good, but lots of other things are good too. Le Cellier is booked for dinner through September I was told (hard to believe -- but OK). I asked him to recommend something else. His first pick was Biergarten, but that doesn't appeal to me. Next up was Marakesh which does sound intriguing. As he pointed out: "At Le Cellier you can eat good meat. At Marakesh you can eat good meat AND watch bellydancers." The choice seems obvious to me.

We have our parkhopper tickets, resort package with meal plan, airline tickets, car reservation, dining reservations, and a brand new set of luggage. We just need to find someone to feed the cat for a week, pack, and we're good to go.

Wish us luck.

We'll be there the same time as you!! Have a great time!

Have fun - I'll be there this Friday through next Friday
see ya there!

Robert,

Your plans sound terrific! I hope you and your family have a wonderful time. :goodvibes

Our goal is to avoid meltdowns by not getting into stressful situations that set them off.

That's a great idea!

Don't forget to use Fastpasses which can really be invaluablel And take an hour each of alone time to go and ride the headliners or just get a break.

Have a great time. Can't wait to hear how you got on. popcorn::

I should've mentioned that we plan on utilizing the GAC so hopefully that will get us through any long lines more quickly. Combined with having a grandmother and aunt to assist in kid hand-offs should make things easier as well!

I'm getting way to excited. I've reading trip reports like mad this past week. Getting little work done in fact. Spending all my time here. :)

Robert, I think that your attitude about flexibility and going with the flow is going to be the key to a fabulous vacation! The GAC really helps to reduce overstimulation and will pre-empt a lot of would-be meltdowns.

pixiedust: for a truly magical time....

Robert,

You know, if you are having any difficulty "making it" to any ADR using WDW transportation, there is another option.

Bell Services can call a taxi-van for you. It costs like $15 to go just about anywhere on property and it can really save time and aggrevation.

I tried it for the first time on our last trip; once when we were in danger of being late for our ADR at Boma, and once when we were just really tired at the end of the night after Illuminations in EPCOT and didn't feel like dealing with a crowded bus. It was money well spent.

As far as the :surfweb: addiction to the DIS, :welcome: to the club!!

Oh, and just to make you even more crazy, I highly recommend that you check out www.TourGuideMike.com.

Lots and Lots of really great touring advice there!! More money well spent!

Robert, sounds like a fabulous time will be had by all. Hope you have a magical trip! pixiedust: Can't wait to read the post trip report!

Hi Robert! Sounds like you have a wonderful trip planned...! Your easy and relaxed approach is just excellent. I think the best way to enjoy WDW is to let go and just have fun.

Enjoy!!

Packed and ready to go. Shutting down the laptop for now (to pack it). My next post should be from Coronado Springs Resort. My flight leaves in 11 hours. Kids are tucked in. Time to get some shut eye. :faint:

How do I get this thread moved to the Trip Reports forum now that the trip has started?

Well, getting settled in to CSR. I misunderstood the internet connectivity. I thought it was "free wi-fi". It's not free. And it's not wi-fi. I'm cabled up in the room at $10/day. Ah, well. :-)

More detailed report coming later tonight. We're off to make an ADR at Wolfgang Pucks right now.

Yayyy!! A live report! I just looked at my semi live photo of the B/Y Club and Epcot on my Weather Bug and it looks GLORIOUS! Blue skies, 70 degrees....hope you're all having a fantastic time!

Rob,

Thinking about your family and hoping you are having a great start! Really looking forward to reading about your adventures.

Sunday

06:30 Evelyn begin packing in earnest. I try, and fail, to keep the kids out of her hair. I do my duties of taking out the trash/recycling/compost, turn off the AC, lock the windows and doors, etc. Flight is at 09:30. Plan is to leave house by 07:30. By 08:00 at the latest.

08:05 Leave house.:rolleyes1

09:00 Arrive at RDU Gate A16. Only misstep made so far was I forgot you can't bring a soda with you through security anymore. One diet coke lost to the TTA's trash barrel. <sigh>

11:30 Met Brian from Mears who got our bags from the carousel and led us to his car.

12:00 Arrive CSR. Two cast members opened our doors on either side of the car. Brian transferred our bags onto a bell services cart. A very nice cast member gave us our receipt for them and let us know they'd be stored for us until we checked in and then transferred to our room. I tried to tip her and she refused to take any gratuity. Sorry I didn't catch her name.

The room is nice. We got spoiled on our last stay at AKL. This is definitely "moderate" compared to that "deluxe". But, we're not really here for the room are we?

12:15 We checked in quickly and easily and then went the Bell Services desk to claim our luggage. I confirmed they had a reservation for my MIL and that we would be in adjoining rooms. Yes, no problem there. Ruppert led us to a golf cart and picked up our bags, then got us to our "Cabana" (Bldg 8B). He also refused a tip, but after I made a second attempt he took it.:)

We headed over to the "Dig Site" (main pool) and let the kids swim. They LOVED it. Evelyn saw someone walk by with something red and intoxicating and demanded she have one. I went to the pool bar and orderd her a frozen strawberry margarita and a regular margarita on the rocks for me ($20 with tip). Do I want salt? Of COURSE I do. Load me up. We enjoyed these while watching the kids ride down the Jaguar Slide over and over again. The 'ritas were perfecto. Only complaint that mine was gone too quickly.

After just a few minutes Autie Sue called from her Mears car as they were just leaving MCO. I told her to call back when they were entering Disney. 20 minutes later the phone rang again and she confirmed she was waving at Mickey & Miney at the entrance archway. I began the trek over to El Centro to meet them.

Just as I was passing Bus Stop 1, I saw a white Lincoln Towncar and checked... sure enough the window came down and there was Aunt Sue waving furiously at me and calling "Hey Rob!!"

There check-in experience was different. There was no one at the entrance to greet us. My MIL beat me to the tip of the driver which irked me.

I checked the Bell desk when we entered and there was no one there. Maybe there was some baggage crisis somewhere that required all hands on deck. Oh, well. We got on the registration line. After a minute a manager-type CM, Mehdi, came up to chat with us about our trip so far. He left after a moment and we continued to wait. Another minute comes by and Mehdi returns and asks us to come with him. He leads us to the concierge desk (where you purchase tickets, etc) and informs us that Michelle would be happy to check us in there. That was cool. :thumbsup2

I wanted to ensure again that they were going to be in adjoing rooms. Michelle told us we would be. She went through her spiel, showing MIL and SIL where they would be on the resort map etc. Then she informed us that their room wasn't yet ready and gave us a card with a phone number to call at 3pm to find out the room assignment. At this point I was confused. I asked Michelle again, "Well, what room number will they be in." She responded, "I can't tell you that just yet, that's why you need to call at 3pm." I replied, "But I thought they were going to be in the adjoining room?" At this point she got all conspiratorial on us and waved us in to a huddle. She said, in her best clandestine voice, "You are. But I wasn't supposed to tell you that yet." She put her finger to her lips. Shhhhh. We all did the same. Shhhh. Secret's safe with us. This was all a lot of fun.

Still no one from Bell Services around so we begin the hike to Cabana 8B. We dropped their bags in our room and let the ladies get freshened up a bit. Then we headed to the Dig Site pool to meet up with Ev and the kids.

14:00 Hugs and kisses all around as Meme got reaquainted with her grandchildren. "Look how they've grown!" I was getting concerned with something more urgent though. We had ADR at Wolfgang Pucks at 5pm. It's 2pm now and folks are starting to talk about "what's for lunch". Oh, so this is how it starts. The best laid plans.... <sigh>

I called DINE to see if I could push back the dinner reservation. No such luck. I'd asked for a 6p or 7p. They said that restaurant is currently flagged to not accept any more dinner reservations but that there is room for walk-up traffic. Ah, so I could take my chances... Hmm. No way.

So we decide to use our first Counter Service meals on Siestas. The poolside bar & grill. Cheesburgers, chicken wraps, chicken fingers all around. About what you'd expect for poolside fare. Nothing wrong with it. The french fries were particularly yummy and we had to try hard not to fill up on them.

16:30 Time to head over to DTD. Evelyn had no luck getting Evan to come out of the pool. He loved standing under the fountain. He called it "his shower." Chloe was continuing to do laps on the waterslide. She was easy to intercept. Evan, on the other hand, was in the middle of the pool and none of us adults had swim suits on. I used my "Father" voice and told Evan "it was time to go to dinner. We're going to a park. Come on. Fun fun, this way." Suprisingly, he listened and got out of the pool. I think I was able to coax him out by making it seem like an exciting adventure.

17:00 We took the bus to Pleasure Island and hoofed it to Wolfgang Pucks, arriving just at 5pm on the dot for our 5pm reservation. Dinner was fabulous. I had the calamari appetizer which was just about the best I've ever had. It came with a curry aioli that was really good and a small side of cucumbers. Other's had the soups. Evelyn had the butternut squash and red pepper soup. She cleaned her bowl. I offered some calamari to Evan, without explaining what it was. I told him it was sort of like clams or shrimp, both of which he loves. He gobbled up half tha squid. As we neared the end of the plate he started blocking my fork hand whenever I tried to take another bite. He LOVED it. That's my boy. I told him what he was eating and he said, "Squid is delicious, Dad!" Yes it is. :)

---heading to MK---will update later---

...update continues...

Dinner was wonderful. We were seated at a large table tucked away in a quiet corner. We had windows all around showing views of the walkway and out over the water. Evan loved seeing the water taxis go back and forth. I enjoyed the pumpkin ravioli with fried sage and a brown butter sauce with pine nuts. Delectable! For desert a large piece of carrot cake. Very good as well. The restaurant got busier by 6pm but there were still lots of tables available. One large group was seated near us and they said they weren't planning on eating there, but they looked in the window and saw what we were enjoying and said, "We gotta get some of that!"

Only negative thing that happened at WP was my wife found her coffee at dessert undrinkable. She'd ordered decaf and it was probably sitting on the burner too long (like, maybe all day?).

After a leisurely dinner we headed out to explore DTD. Evan requested we ride on the water taxi. I've learned this was to become a theme as you'll see in my Day 2 report. The kid loves riding disney transportation as much as anything else in Disney! We took the boat from DTD West to Marketplace. Then walked back toward Pleasure Island. I tried getting the kids into one of the shops (World of Disney?) but it was full of scary Pirate stuff at the entrance and they both retreated quickly. Then we found the wonderful Lego store and spent the rest of the evening there. Evan bought a big bucket of legos and a legos building board. Chloe got some lego people magnets. She loves magnets. Eventually we found our way back to the busstop at PI and got back home by 10pm. And promptly fell into bed. Zzzzz.

legos

Do you think that I could get Billy to eat some vegetables if I told him they were "sort of like" Fries? Hmmm. Probably not. ;)

Anyway, it sounds like you're having a great start and I'm looking forward to the rest.

Kathy
