Road Trip 2010, Our Trip Home!

You really should try something a bit more west. Maybe like..umm I dunno..TEXAS!

Texas will have to wait for the summer trip! ;)
Good call skipping Buffalo; from weather warning:

LAKE*EFFECT*SNOW*AND*DETERIORATING*ROADS*WILL*IMPACT*THE*AREA*TODAY.*THE*SNOW*COULD*BE*HEAVY*AT*TIMES.*EXPECT*AN*ADDITIONAL*3*TO*7*INCHES*TODAY.*THE*COMBINATION*OF*SNOW*AND*NORTHWEST*WINDS*OF*15*TO*30*MPH*WILL*CREATE*CONSIDERABLE*BLOWING*AND*DRIFTING*SNOW.*WIND*CHILLS*WILL*BE*ZERO*TO*10*BELOW*TODAY.**IF*YOU*WILL*BE*TRAVELING*ACROSS*THE*REGION*BE*PREPARED*FOR*RAPID*CHANGES*IN*ROAD*AND*VISIBILITY*CONDITIONS.

I we decide not to go back through Buffalo! Thank you for letting us know. :thumbsup2:thumbsup2

Further on this, watch for the lake effect squalls around London too - the Weather Network showed 30-40 cm already on the ground there, with more lake effect today. Wind chills here are -22 now.

This should not be too bad depending on the winds.
The Thule we have on top of the car really effects the driving when it's windy. It's pretty cold here already so we are getting used to the cold, as much as one person can get used to it!
Please keep us posted on the weather conditions as we head north!
I am checking in on the boards every hour or so, this is going to be a great help to us! :thumbsup2:thumbsup2

Safe travels today John and Katherine! I'll be tracking your progress.

Jan 15 (I believe).

Drive safe...

Thank you, and we will drive safe. :thumbsup2:thumbsup2
If the weather gets too bad we will just stop and continue on tomorrow.
I am sure the school is going to be impressed that the boys will not be there for the first day back after the break.:lmao::lmao::lmao:

My girls are so jealous of the length of break your boys have had - plus they got to spend it in Disney.

Of course they have been off for two weeks and are going stir crazy.:laughing:

Thanks Anne! Sorry we missed you this time, but there will be more trips in future. :)
As I said in my prior post, helping with weather updates is going to be a great help. With the carrier on top of the car we have no radio for weather updates. So I will be checking in here and posting our location as we go.

Please post weather updates here!!!!

right now for your east side of Michigan I94 leg of the trip, it is very cold (14), but the sun is out and the wind finally stopped, should be clear driving.

This will be disappointing for John!
However I am thinking this is a good reason for that summer vacation we have been thinking about.
I want to explore some of states we have been through both on the way to Disney and on the way home.

http://www.gilmorecarmuseum.org/

Here is the website for Gilmore Car Museum. I'm not really into car museums and car shows but it is a very nice place with a huge selection of cars. It's located about 30-45 minutes from the Lake Michigan town of South Haven which has nice free beaches. There are other nice lake towns in the area also (i.e. Saugatuck, Douglas, etc.)

Weather update at home - it's cold here. Freezing cold. Freezing, freezing cold. Toronto has a cold advisory til further notice. Unloading the car is not going to be a thrill. :goodvibes

Safe travels.

I haven't found a website with highway conditions for the interstates like we get for the 400 series up here but the Weather Network is showing the 401 to be snow covered from just east of Chatham to London. I just talked to a co-worker who drove in from London this morning...she confirms, snow covered on the 401 with some cross wind. Visibility should be ok, but they have been dumped on so far this weekend.

drive safe!

Thanks Fiona, but it's John's job to unpack the car!

Thanks Donna can you give me another weather update tonight?
Congrats on post count of 1400.

Congrats on post count of 1400.

Didn't even notice the 1400!

expect conditions to remain as posted or get worse. The pattern of the squalls hasn't changed much over the weekend. Yes, this is how much I watch the weather on work days. It passes the time and keeps you ready for what hits or misses. Speaking of which - gotta get ready & head out. It is snowing where I am, but that could be traces of Hamilton's squalls...I am fairly close to them. :upsidedow

It's 6pm and we are on I-69 heading north. We just stopped and had dinner with Brandie & Matt, it was wonderful! According to the GPS we should be in MI in 3 hours.

I hope the weather holds for you. When do you expect to be home?

We figure we have about another 9 hours of driving. We don't know if we will do it all tonight or if we will stop and do some tomorrow.

I would 100% undoubtedly STOP FOR THE NIGHT. The weather here is TERRIBLE. It has not stopped snowing all day. I went to the Grocery Store and the car was sliding all over the place. Plows are just coming out, I am sure the highways are a bit cleaner, but it is still a SLOW move.

The squalls are supposed to clear late tonight or tomorrow morning. I would suggest you stop no later than Windsor for the night. There are whiteouts and the squalls are dumping about 6 inches every 6 hours or so.
It will take them a while to clear the roads as they have been pounded all weekend

I-69 North to 94 and 94 into Detroit should be clear. We've had clear weather the last two days here in this part of MI.
