I work in a school and there are roaches. Big ones and little ones. I do not have these things at home and I'm worried about bringing them home. What do you do to keep this from happening?

Personally, I would leave my purse locked in the car. If you do bring in your purse, don't have any food in it. They also love anything wet, and they like paper. I would carry my keys and cell phone. dont' leave those suckers anywhere to get into. YOu won't bring them home if you don't carry them in.

I live in FLorida, we have those giant roaches. I HATE those things. IF you want to see a grown woman scream, just show me one of those nasty creatures.

I know they make huge sealable bags you could put your coat and bag in, but I don't know where to get them. I know lots of people used them in our lower elementary school last year when there was a big lice issue. Try googling.

Roaches are nothing.

I work on the 17th floor of a high rise in a city.

I've got a mousetrap in my cube! I've seen the mouse twice now in the past 4 months!

That is a tough one.

The biggest carrier is going to be your purse, or anything that you bring like a tote. Easy for a roach to climb in there and then once you are home climb about.

So if you must bring in a purse, tote, etc. make sure that you can zip it tightly shut so there is no access.

Also do not bring any storage of ANY kind home as well as no "back and forth" with items.

If you must bring something to work & back home, then before it goes into the house empty it outside to make sure it is bug free.

Roaches love to eat glue in bags and love cardboard. They tend to deposit eggs there. Avoid bringing that into your home and car.

Clothing...that is tricky. This is probably where you are going to have the biggest vehicle for transport, esp. bulky coats. Shake things out and inspect before bringing into the house.

I just made a dedicated purse for work. I'll leave it in my car trunk. I might leave my coat in the car too. Winter is almost over. But my lunch kit is a problem. It has all kinds of layers for things to hide in plus I use reusable containers. I'm going to rethink this. I'm not sure of a good solution other then to use completely disposable items and throw it all out when i leave school. I might just do this because the problem is pretty bad.

Oh and I'd take mice over roaches any day. They are not so expensive to get rid of and I have a kitty who would love to play with a mouse.
Also, I teach sewing and I am always bringing fabric back and forth. I might have to curtail that too. They aren't really worried about getting rid of these critters here.

I work in a government building.

We have roaches, spiders, and most recently a terrible rodent infestation. Oh, and I did I mention we've had no hot water for 5 weeks now!!

I keep my bags off the floor. It's been 3 years and I've never brought anything home. My dishes are sealed up in a ZipLoc bag every night.

I was going to suggest the a larger, say 2 gallon ziplock. Put your personal items in there. Cab you hang a reusable grocer bag on a hook and then put the ziplock inside there? Sorry you have to deal with this, anyone who has to, it is not fun.

When I first started my job about 3.5 years ago there were roaches everywhere all the time, it is an old building in D.C. and it was just infested. I personally complained a lot and after about a year we had a company come in and they treated a few times over the course of 9 months or so and now we only find them every once in awhile as long as the building keeps up with the treatments. I was really worried about bringing them home at first but really I have not talked to anyone I have worked with that has brought them home, and many have been working in the building 10+ years. I really don't worry about it anymore all of my friends who work in D.C. have similar problems so I figure the city is just infested (it is a city afterall) not much I can do about that. If you do want to put things in giant zip lock bags target sells them.

Try ants. Had to deal with that last summer. The little teeny ones at that. Everything in my cube was in zip loc bags. It was a mess. I didn't think they were ever going to get rid of those things.

I used to work in a lab with a lot of birds (like, several hundred). There was no way possible to keep the place entirely clean of bird seed and other edibles. We had both roaches and mice (not to mention other problems). I never worried about bringing the roaches home, but then I wouldn't have brought my bags into the bird rooms anyways. The mice we trapped humanely and released.

I'd much rather deal with mice than roaches. I have to admit, if I had one in my house (and the two cats didn't get it), I'd probably buy it a cage, catch it, and make it a (not exactly tame) family member.

If you see one, don't squish it with your shoe, eggs can get on your shoe and then you track it back into your car/home.

Yeah, but you've probably never brought an unseen mouse home in your purse!

Sounds like it is time for an anonymous call to the news media and the health department. Roaches are a health hazard to students, especially if that school has any type of cafeteria. Yuck!

My husband worked in a private office that had roaches once (and he is not a bug person) the problem was ongoing for 3 months. The facilities person did not think it was a big deal. For a couple weeks, every day after the facilities guy left my husband sprinkled some cake crumbs in front of the facilities guys office door. Once all the roaches had moved to the facilities guys office, it was suddenly a big deal (and the problem was resolved).
