DH and I are planning an anniversary trip. The week that works best is Spring Break so the girls can go to Gmas for the week. We can drive them to Ohio, and leave from Columbus.

I know that Cancun would be horrible. Well horrible for us, since we want quiet and laid back--not College Spring break. Has anyone been south of Cancun during this time? Does Spring Break spill over to these resorts?

We have also looked at Punta Cana, but the flights aren't that great from Ohio, and would take up much of our time. Mexico seems to be the most affordable option we've seen.

ETA--I did see a couple of resorts in the Riviera Maya that say no spring breakers. Do the resorts really enforce this?

Hubby and I have gone to the Riviera Maya region every year for the past eight years... and never to Cancun.

We stayed at all-inclusives our first couple of trips but our favorite way to travel is to stay in the town of Playa del Carmen in one of their many charming boutique hotels. VERY affordable and nice!

The town has plenty to do... including night life... but it's not party central, like Cancun. We stay a short walk to the gorgeous beaches and enjoy the variety of restaurants.

Let me know if I can be of any help! We won't be going this year (budget cuts), so I'd be happy to live vicariously through your trip. :goodvibes

I've been to Riviera Maya once (I stayed a little south of Playa De Carmen, and the two of us have been to Cancun years ago. We love it too:goodvibes

Check with the state department. Not too long ago, I saw a national news show saying how dangerous Mexico is right now. Do not do any driving yourself. There have been over 2000 kidnappings by the drug gangs and some of them have been in tourist areas.

We honeymooned at Excellence Riviera Maya. It was a beautiful resort and very laid back. There were some singles there, but not many. They may have been there for a work retreat. Barely noticed them, even at night. Not sure what the resort is like during spring break, you can search reviews on tripadvisor.com to see how it was during spring break 2009.

Do a couples only resort and you won't have to worry about the college kids. I like the area south near Akumal. Playa Del Carmen is nice but too developed for me. I know some travel agents in Columbus who will be really great and know about all the best deals to the Yucatan. PM me if you want help from someone. My friends are very experienced, professional and knowledgable. I WAS a travel agent for 27 years until 9/11 and I decided I wanted a job that was more oriented toward children and insync with my son's school schedule.

Thanks:goodvibes I've been on tripadvisor looking at resorts, but didn't know about the discussion stuff.

When I went a few years ago, I stayed at Catalonia Riviera Maya. Thinking of a Riu resort this time.

Thank me by packing me in your suitcase!!!!! I'm ready for a little :beach:!!!

DH and I were planning a trip for this past September to the Catalonia!!!! We decided the money would be better spent as a down payment on a new car. I needed one.

What did you think of the Catalonia???? I still would like to go there:love:!

I liked it. Restaurants were good. The resort was super clean. The beach was a little rocky. The staff was so nice, and accommodating.

We had booked a return trip for this past June, but life got in the way for us too. Funny how that happens:rolleyes:

We stayed at Secrets Capri Riviera Maya 2 years ago for our 15 yr. anniversary and loved it. I based my decision after reviewing tripadvisor reviews. We loved it and it is definitely geared towards couples.

Let us know what you decide! :goodvibes
