Technically, it's not "gone". River Country is in "mothballs" and still all there. It closed for rehab and never re-opened after the 9/11 tourism slump. It's believed to be the victim of the popularity of the more "thrill" themed TL and BB.
Yes, River Country is definitely not seperate from Bay Lake. I'm sure that's why it hasn't at least reopened as a pool for Ft. Wilderness.
I miss Discovery Island. I went there when all that was there was a ship wreck. I believe Walt himself thought it would be great to build on the island. I know it was saved by a champion somewhere in Disney from closure with the opening of AK, but then succumbed a while later.
If Disney had any sense, they would wall off River Country from Bay Lake and drain it. Then, they could put in a pool structure where the lake bed was and reopen it -- or, they could make it Ft. Wilderness's pool!
