We just purchased RIV last week and already have our first 2 stays booked for this fall.

DH and I are going down for 3 nights for our anniversary and all I could book was a preferred view studio. I normally don't care what the view is and am already a point miser so I considered waitlistING a standard view but then thought maybe sitting on our balcony with a glass of wine in the evening while watching fireworks would be nice.

What is considered a preferred view? Is it a pool view or Skyliner or something else? I have seen conflicting reports.

Yes. Any of the above. Basically, standard view is the Epcot-facing part of the resort. The rest of the resort is considered preferred view.

Although, I can't imagine there is much of a bad view anywhere. It is surrounded by interesting visuals.

The back side of the resort faces the parking lot and bus stops. These are standard views - the standard views with Epcot views are the north side, higher floors.
If you are in a preferred you will see the pool, the lake, and maybe the skyliner. We lucked out and had all three!

You could always request higher floors and specify what side, that is what we did and got a great view of the lake and pool on the 5th floor. I would assume the preferred view is any room facing east, west and south and the standard views would be facing north.

Those preferred views are a massive drain on your points, unless you spend hours on the balcony I wouldn’t bother

I agree as well, some times (like winter when its colder) when/if we dont use the balcony at all, standard view it is. But during the warmer time when we could use it a bit more, then we get the preferred view to have something better to look at then a parking lot.
