RIP Thread

Wow, another death. At least old Oscar lived to 95. Too many people are dying young lately. And you're right Rog...what American kid hasn't sang "I wish I were an Oscar Mayer weiner..."? Quite a legacy.

Oh I wish I were a Oscar Mayer amalgamate incorporate,
that is what I truely want to be,
cause if I were a Oscar Mayer amalgamate incorporate,
(well, you get the picture)

Rest in peace O. M.

A 21 wienie whistle salute to Oscar Mayer. The guy who headed an American institution; the epitome of American ingenuity - take pieces of meat that should be thrown out, mix them with chemical preservatives and market them to America with little children singing a catchy jingle. Seriously, I bet nearly everybody in America has eaten an Oscar Mayer product at some point in their life. You can't argue with that success.

One mans trash is another mans slaw dog!

Amanda introduced me to the chili slaw-dog when I was visiting. I omitted the chili, though. It wasn't bad, just odd to this yankee. She yelled at me though (and laughed) and told me it wasn't the same without the chili. :confused3

In my GI tract, that would be dangerously explosive.

RIP Walter Cronkite.

...and that's the way it is.

We miss you and real news.

They just announced that Walter Cronkite just died. So sad!

Oops, Shannon beat me to it!

For so many years Walter Cronkite WAS the news. He had a way of being sincere and believable, of making the darkest times seem like they weren't so bad, that everything was going to be alright. When he left CBS news, so did my feeling that news could possibly be presented in an unbiased way. And that's the way it is.......

Seeing Walter Cronkite on TV is one of my strongest childhood memories, since he showed up for dinner at my house every night at 6:30 PM. I vividly remember him talking about the moon landing, hippies in San Francisco, the Vietnam war, MIA's, POW's, Watergate. The local news people came and went, but Walter was always there. And if he said it, you knew it was true. And that's the way it was. Then I went off to college, and he disappeared.

Then when my big kids were little, he was the voice behind the show Liberty's Kids, and it was great to hear him again. :goodvibes

Uncle Walter, you were a great guy. Thanks, and RIP.

My God! Not Walter! This is getting serious - they're dropping like flies!!!!!!!!!!!

Goodbye Walter. When somebody comes to your table every night like he did it makes him family. Everything that mattered in the 20th century seemed like it was his story to deliver. RIP to a great journalist.

Walter Cronkite was a true person of principle. Something sorely lacking today. I had the extreme pleasure of meeting him when I was 19 & working at a resort on Longboat Key. He seemed most gentile and gracious, and did not appear to look down on anyone. Fast forward about 30 years, and he once again crossed my path in Sarasota. No, he didn't remember me, but he did take the time to shake my hand when I said "hello" and how much I truly admired him.

He never let sensationalizm interfere with the plain facts. A rare quality then, and an extinct quality now.

RIP, Walter. I expect you are now discussing things with God.

Wow..Deb. How nice for you that you actually met him. It's good to know he was as genuine in person as he presented himself to be on TV.

I also had the pleasure of witnessing many of these events with Walter when I was growing up.

He will be missed,
