RIP Thanksgiving ….

Well instead of having a wonderful FAMILY day on Thanksgiving, my son will be having Thanksgiving dinner with his employer and his co-workers – Walmart!!!

Is it just me or is this the final nail in the coffin of family time? Really Walmart??? Providing a Thanksgiving dinner to it’s employees. How wonderful of you! After all, his family couldn’t possibly provide a dinner for him to enjoy with his loved ones. Instead, he now gets to spend time with strangers and acquantinces.

Is it remotely possible for the American public to not shop for a day? Does family mean less than the almightly dollar? I really believe that this society needs to take a look at their priorities. And, if the polls are true, then 80% of this country does not support these businesses imposing on their holiday!!

Vent over. Thanks for listening - Ugh!!

I agree with you and I think it is shameful. Only essential workers need to be at work on Thanksgiving. I don't NEED to shop.

The only way we can voice our opinion is through our dollars and availability. Workers need to take a stand and either not apply for work that day, call out sick, or not take a job that insists upon working this holiday. Customers need to not buy things either in person on on the internet. I understand the need for employment but I'm also of the mindset that if I am lucky to have a job, they are lucky to have me in their employ.

I'm "voting" with my opinion this year. I am a HEAVY HEAVY Black Friday shopper and I refuse to spend any money on Thanksgiving. I LIKE shopping at 4 in the morning on Black Friday. We need to move the Friday back into Black Friday.

Only if you can convince the American public to not get sick on Thanksgiving, to not have any crime, to not start their kitchen on fire with their turkey and then not go out to eat in that restaurant, not to go to a movie or even to not go to Disney.

While I won't be shopping on Thanksgiving, I can't see the huge outrage. Our doctors, nurses, police, firefighters, movie theater employees, restaurant workers and Disney workers have been doing it for ages without all the angst and fuss retail workers are making.

I can't see how it is ok to go to a restaurant for Thanksgiving because you don't want to cook, but a store opening up is completely evil.

what about the movie theater employees, the restaurant workers, the airline people? I notice you are heading down to Disney Thanksgiving week. Shouldn't you reschedule because somebody may be missing their dinner? They may have had to work Thanksgiving day and were planning on having dinner on your flight day?

Yep. I won't be shopping on Thanksgiving, but how is Wal-mart, Kmart, Sears, Macy's, etc. being open any more evil than a restaurant being open? Or WDW?

And RIP Thanksgiving because another store is opening that night? I get your frustration, but it's not the end of the holiday.

The kids are adults, so yes it is. I don't know how old they are, but are any of them married yet? My SIL is a type A, my way or highway type of person who doesn't want to change how she does Thanksgiving and boy is she getting it handed to her now that her kids have significant others and job obligations.

I know people like that too. I don't get it. It is a meal.

I wanted to invite dd's boyfriend over and he eats dinner with his family at 5pm. So I am having "dinner" at 1pm. My family has never met him.

Of course if people cannot be there AT the meal time, they just stop in and we warm a plate for them. In essence it is "open house" sort of. That that people can visit and do what they need to do.

Works for us.:thumbsup2

Everyone says, "if people would quit shopping then the stores wouldn't be open." I see it as the opposite. The people are shopping because the stores keep pushing opening with the limited sales earlier and earlier.

The reason people use to be lined up at the door at 4 am for an 8 am opening was to get in front. Stores started opening at 4 am because the people were there so the people started lining up at midnight. Then again the stores started opening at midnight so the people started lining up at 8 pm and it will go on each year like that until they are just open completely over Thanksgiving.

It is all about the almighty dollar. The stores want the almighty dollar under any circumstances and the people want to save the almighty dollar no matter what junk quality stuff they are buying.

The people aren't yet smart enough to know that most of the "Black Friday Only" deals are still there well into January. The stores are smart enough to know that the people don't know that. Everything my wife has ever purchased on a Black Friday Only sale as well as everything I have ever looked at in a Black Friday Only ad has been the same price through January. It's only the cheap junk stuff that is a Black Friday only deal because the stuff is such garbage that they can price it to a point to get attention.

Spoken by someone who does not shop Black Friday, I guess.:scratchin There are significant savings that day.

But if there's no demand for stores to be open at X time on X day, then they wouldn't be open.

Plus, people choose to shop or not to shop. Blaming the store is akin to blaming a bar for an alcoholic's addiction.

That said, I am old enough to remember when absolutely nothing was open. If you forgot the sage, tough luck. You filled up the night before. You planned.
Yep! I think it was the first year we were married and we had a 2 1/2 hour drive between my parents and my in-laws on Thanksgiving. The night before I remembered our car in my parent's driveway only had a 1/4 tank of gas! My Dad had to call the police (non-emergency number) to find a gas station that would be open for me to stop at and get gas. It was a convenience store on the other side of town.

A few years later, I remember my Mom realizing that she'd forgotten some ingredient for Turkey Day on the big day... My Dad and I drove to a local supermarket to get the item. We laughed when we saw that everyone in the checkout line was a male! It was a meeting of the "hunters"!

It stinks that Walmart has decided to join the growing list of businesses that opt to work on Thanksgiving... but they are hardly unique, or by any means the first. But, I do know that they're popular for some people to "rag" on.

Of course stores want to make the "almighty" dollar. Why else are they in business? And of course people want to save money. I guess you don't read the budget board here. And it has been ever thus. My mom used to talk about waiting for deals in a local store. That's how I got my first Barbie - while we were in school one day she and my younger sister went to the store, and as soon as it was announced, she pounced. (this was in the olden days of the 1970s)

Yep. Walmart always seems to be the popular choice of people's rants on this subject as well as many other rants about retailing.

:thumbsup2

I would love to hear the OP's response to this.

The reference to making a lot of money was a jest. Basically referring to the football players

The reason I reference this thread as RIP is because the day is basically becoming just another day.

And I don't understand why--since Walmart staying open on Thanksgiving is not new.:confused3 Ever since we have had a 24 hour Walmart, they've been open on Thanksgiving.

At least this year they are providing dinner and a shopping discount..so Walmart is actually moving forward rather than backward.

OP. I see you are relatively new here. Just bow out now and don't go into any other detail or reason. The folks hear say the same thing over and over again every year on multiple threads.

What about WDW what about gas stations, what about BLAH BLAH BLAH.

Don't engage them. I am also with you in that rearranging you day and time is NOT the same thing. I know what I am talking about.

Hang in there and hopefully you won't have to go through this again.

Its the same every year because every year people come here to complain about such and such store being open. I have yet to see one person complain that WDW and all the restaurants and stores in the parks are open that day. Or that the movie theaters, gas stations, convenience stores, restaurants, grocery stores are open that day. For some reason Thanksgiving is only ruined by Macys, or Walmart or TRU being open :confused3
I get that it stinks for families who are effected, but families have been effected by it for years and have still managed to celebrate together, whether its earlier or later or on a different day.

DD is working at Disney Thanksgiving and Christmas. We'll celebrate those holidays another day.

Right. Because Thanksgiving is only ruined if you have to work retail.

It is not "RIP" if you have to work gas stations or BLAH BLAH BLAH.

It is definitely NOT the same because those workers are there, by god, to help us. Their families do not count.

It is only when you have to rearrange your day that it counts. :thumbsup2

People say the same things over and over again because people keep complaining about the same thing. In fact, we just had a thread about this a couple weeks ago.

I personally find it hypocritical that someone complaining about people having to work on Thanksgiving has no problem admitting watching TV, which requires MANY people, most of whom also make minimum wage, work.
