RIP Ron Santo, what an amazing guy/legend

He was a class act...I hope he and Harry are having fun talking Cubs baseball in Heaven right now.

My heart is breaking this morning. Does it seem strange to mourn a person you never met? Ron represented everything that is good about baseball...talent, determination, a never quit attitude and the eternal optimism of spring. I hold out every winter for the first spring training game in March, when Pat's voice says, "Chicago Cubs baseball is on the air!" It will seem so strange to not hear Ronnie along side him, cheering and groaning at every play.

yeah, this is hitting hard..just always thought he'd always be here..as he persevered no matter what. What he has gone thru in his life, man, just a wonderful fabulous guy. He IS the Cubs...and has done SO much for diabetes..wow...I don't care who you root for in baseball, Ron Santo was loved here by all.

It is just so heartbreaking...I will miss him and there will never be another like him. He passed last night after a few days in a coma...God Speed Ron :sad1:
You're in MY Hall of Fame!

When my alarm went off this morning, the first thing that I heard Greg Jarrett say was that Ronny had died. At first I thought it was a bad dream.

Cubs fans everywhere will miss hearing you call the games.

Rest in peace!

not strange at all, matter of fact that is exactly how much he affected people. In the movie "This Old Cub", where Ron is sitting waiting for the call from the HOF...HEARTWRENCHING...Chicago is in mourning, Arizona is...just so sad

Sad to hear of his passing. I miss the good ole days of Steve Stone and Harry Caray calling the Cubbies.

and there's always the Prayer of the Cubs fan, given on opening day...

"Dear Lord, we thank thee for this another season.
We thank thee for the friendly confines of Wrigley.
And dear Lord, we acknowledge Thy hand in all things,
And even though the season hasn't even started,
we are grateful to know that there's always next year."

:cheer2:

So so so so sad! The games will not be the same without him!

He was a great guy. Never met a stranger and the Cubs #1 fan.

RIP buddy.

This sucks. I really liked Ron. Why couldn't someone annoying die instead? I know that is horrible, but oh bah! Of course, NOW they will put him in Cooperstown; after blowing him off 19 times. How sucky for his family too, he was in a coma over Thanksgiving; I really hate when people die around the holidays.

I sent in a donation to Juvenile Diabetes this morning, that was Ron's big charity and it made me feel a bit better to do something good in Ron's name.

I know, right? Ron had stated that he do NOT wish to be inducted posthumously...what REALLY stung was in '08, no one was chosen, I mean, salt in the wound. That happened I think 3 or 4 times. We support diabetes too, because of Ron. He would make sure to sign autographs for the handicapped kids waiting at Wrigley, always made time for them to make sure they had been tended to..just an amazing guy.
#10 lives on at Wrigley.

I cried when I heard the news. My husband immediately went outside and hug up our Cubs flag in his honor. Mr. Santo, you are and always will be a Hall of Famer in our hearts! Rest in Peace.

I'm a Mets fan but I am so sad to hear this. RIP Ron, you are a Hall of Famer to this fan.

As a native Chicagoan and a long time Cub fan, I am in mourning. Bless you for some amazing memories Ron.

A Hall of Famer in any Chicagoan's book, Ronny will be missed by all. He was a classic, in every sense of the word. With WGN, the super station that it is, so many people, everywhere in the country, got to know him over the years. It will tough listening to the GN broadcasts without Ron there as Pat's perfect foil, and their timeless banter back and forth throughout the games.

God speed, Ron, to your Hall of Fame.

I think it's a measure of the man that I haven't read or heard anything negative about him.
