RIP George Steinbrenner

I feel sorry for his family and fans and I always feel sad for another life being over. He was not a nice man but there's little point in rehashing all of that IMO.

He wasn't a man that did things out of the goodness of his heart ~ he did it to be recognized.

Hmmm...not so. I've heard several stories of "normal" folks who were on the receiving of George's extreme generosity. I don't think these ordinary folks have "Steinbrenner" emblazoned across their foreheads.

ETA: He may be worshipped in the NYC area, but he certainly isn't anywhere else.

Again...not true. I'm certainly nowhere near NYC, but there are many here who held him in high regard and can appreciate what he brought to the world of baseball. (and no, not a Yankee fan, either)

I went to college with his daughter Jennifer and her former husband, Steve Swindal. The Steinbrenners have given a lot of money to UNC. Their daughter is currently a student at UNC.

Is it really? Sad day for Yankee fans, sad day for the family. But for all baseball? He was one of the "rich get richer while the small teams get worse and can't compete" leaders. Spare no expense, destroy the total league in favor of your own team having more power, turn the league into a small handful of wealthy teams that can compete and then a bunch of also-rans who can't - where's the drama or fun in that? I just hope the NFL is smart enough not to fall down the same bad path with their current labor dispute.

:thumbsup2

I doubt he'll be missed much beyond NYC and other places he gave $$ to to get his name on whatever building/park/street sign he could.

I never had anything nice to say about him when he was alive ~ why would that suddenly change when he died? :confused3

I agree with the above statements~ except for the one about doing things to be recognized, I dont' know enough about his charity work to say that.

I don't think he did a whole lot for baseball (and yes I know plenty about baseball).

I feel badly for his family and friends at this time. :sad1:

...I'm in such shock - first, that 'Voice of God', Bob Shepard, and now 'The Boss'....wow, what a sad week for us Yankee fans, and for the baseball community in general....my prayers go out to the Yankees organization and the Steinbrenner family...RIP George.....:sad1:

...kind of ironic that Tampa is playing the Yankees this weekend, at Yankee Stadium...

George Steinbrenner in my opinion was the greatest owner of all time. We would all be lucky to work for someone like him. He demands greatness from everyone and typically overpays you. He is the one Boss that doesn't underpay his staff.

Thanks for everything Mr. Steinbrenner. You truly cared about the fans. You wanted your team to always produce for the fans.

Is this going to turn into another Michael Jackson thread? Where you're only allowed to be properly worshipful or you're run off the thread?

The man is dead. What we say now doesn't matter. I don't put any stock in the adage "you must speak respectfully of the dead".

You really are a sad human being. Why trash a guy after he died? I won't even waste my time proving how wrong you are about his only doing things for NYC. Ask the people at Virginia Tech about that. Or Ohio State, where he had no personal ties to the school. Nobody is worshiping anybody here, but we have respect for the dead. Clearly you have no respect for anything.

and just to add "the down to earth..real guy" factor he was: Our local news today spoke to a waitress at the local IHOP where he was a regular customer 3 times a week for years..yep just a regular Joe (she also praised all the things he did for the needy in the area that wasn't publicized at the time & done with no fanfaire ....without anyone asking anything from him) so again R I P

Not true at all. He gave money to all sorts of people. I just heard this morning about a clerk in a 7-11 who was a single parent, working at night, going to college. Steinbrenner paid for the clerk's college.

Look, he wasn't perfect, but who is? And obviously, I'm not a Yankee fan--far from it. But I admired the man, he was a great businessman. When he bought the Yankees in 1973, they were broken down & worth about $10 million. Well, they are now worth almost $2 billion!

He also started the Gold Shield Foundation in Tampa, which provides full scholarships to the spouses and children of fallen firefighters and police officers.

That led to the creation of the Silver Shield Foundation, which does the same for the families of 9/11 victims.

He did amazing things for the community - and not to have his name put on a building (which is pure nonsense).

I met Luis Tiant a few years ago, and he couldn't say enough great things about George Steinbrenner, about how he would always help anyone in need.

It's a sad loss.

Exactly!! :thumbsup2

Off topic: some folks need a class or two in manners ;)

I reserve my respect for those that deserve it. :goodvibes

:stir: Could you please kindly...PLEASE take your wonderful self elsewhere PLEASE ????? I hate to feed into you but heart disease runs in my family & honestly my B/P is going up...please? There must be some compassion in you to do this......................

It's not worth it. Just skip them, and read the positive ones.

What the hell is wrong with some of you? You come on to a thread that is clearly about the death of a person, only to discuss how unimportant he is in various aspects. It just lacks so much respect, it's disgusting.

I totally agree with you. Why on earth would you come onto a thread where people are obviously discussing the passing of a person they admired or respected and then bash said person? It makes no sense except to just stir the pot. Seriously, go away if you don't have something respectful to say.
