RIP Canon Powershot SD300 Digital Elph

So, I found out today that my little guy---a mere 5 years old---passed away over the weekend. Luckily, he died while exploring the streets of Rome so at least I feel a little better that he was living his battery life to the fullest extent when the fatal accident took place.

I let a co-worker borrow my camera for vacation because his wife had dropped theirs and it no longer worked properly. I should have known then that they couldn't be trusted with my beloved Elph---but I let them borrow it anyway so they could capture the memories of their 2 year old daughter's first Italian get-away. Today, when my co-worker returned to the office, he gave me the news that there had been an "incident" (i.e. really far drop onto the concrete) and there were no survivors of the electronic sort.

I'm sure another point and shoot will take this camera's place, but it was sad to know that the camera that got me through so many vacations, parties, family events and shots of my pets is no longer going to linger in my camera bag for the rare occassion I feel like taking it out for some fresh air.

Anyhow...RIP little Elphie, I'll miss you and the wonderful photos you took.

I hope it died late in the trip so they at least got plenty of shots of their baby girl in Rome.

It did, from what I believe it died yesterday and they flew home this morning...apparently got lots of good pics with it, so at least they'll be able to remember their trip with the photos they got.

And---luckily for me, if they aren't able to get it working, they are going to replace it with some cold hard cash!! So---this leads to the question, do I put the $250 or so towards a new lens, or do I buy another p&s when I still have the Oly 1030SW at home??? Hmmmm.

The Sigma 30 is next on my list for the WDW trip in December. Lots more on my list to eventually get, but I feel like that one will probably get the most use and I can just rent the others for the time being

First let me say how nice you were to let them borrow your camera. Second, I am pleasantly surprised that they are compensating you. A lot of people would've just said "sorry" and you would be the one losing out. (And that stinks, but let's face it there are a lot of people like that in this world.) So that's very honorable of them to compensate you. Third, are you kidding? Get the lens!

If I ever had a doubt that my fellow Photo Board DISers would steer me in the right direction---that doubt no longer exists.

I spoke to my co-worker's wife today and she was pretty insistent on paying me what the camera would cost today ($300) even though it turns out they only cracked the LCD screen. I would really prefer they didn't---but I'm not one to argue and I think I've decided to put it towards the Sigma 30. I already had about $200 squirreled away for it, so now I can buy the lens AND a backpack for all of my crap.

Funny story. My first PnS, a Fuji died on the concrete. I had it for 2 years. My Sony Cybershot lived about 2 years as well...also died on the concrete. After dropping those two, my wife insisted I get a shockproof one next. So now I have an Olympus 790SW and have not dropped it once. LOL. Go Figure. *knock on wood*

Wrist straps don't help when the camera is dropped while I'm taking it out of my pocket. It's my "backup" camera when I"m too lazy to cart my 40D around.

I know---it's almost embarassing.

The good news is that even though I should get the money relatively soon---I'm actually going to WAIT to purchase it. I figure, I don't NEED it right now and who knowd, maybe I'll end up figuring out something different I want (although I highly doubt it).

AND---to make things even better, since I now have this extra $$$ I didn't have before, we decided to add an extra day to our trip in December. Never in my life have I been so happy to have someone break my stuff.

Since I shoot Olympus, I've read that there have been some focusing issues with this lens. It may just be more with my type of lens mount, not too sure as I don't read other manufacture forums. I would just make sure to purchase the lens and give yourself time to become very familiar with it. This would also allow time in case of warranty work, etc. About one year ago, I tried a couple different lens at a local camera store and each one had focusing issues. I'm hoping that when it's my time I will find a good copy. I've only got 4 more months until our vacation. It seems like forever!

From what I understand---this lens has focus problems with Nikon as well. I will definitely buy it by this summer---well in advance of our December trip because of exactly the reasons stated, I would hate to buy it a month ahead of time and find out that there are problems that Sigma needs to fix and therefore can't bring it on vacation. That would majorly stink.
