In self-defense and possibly in defense of a loved one. By this i mean if they person trying to kill, rape or whatever was actually doing their thing i do not mean knowing that someone is on to you so going around and getting them first.
Seriously though i think if someone was trying to do something to me i think i'd just seriously injure them. They suffer more really that way, and i wouldn't feel guilty.
Oh and here i'm pretty sure it's legal to kill someone in self defense but only on your own property(so it's still murder if you kill a person who attacks you while you wander through a park, or would you be charged with manslaughter?)
