Right age for ear piercing?

My sister had hers done when she was around 3 months old, I was around 6 months for the first hole. It's something that is done in our family. Personally, I don't see the big deal about doing it when the kid is young, I don't know of anybody that had pierced ears as a baby that didn't want them. If you don't want to wear earrings, just take them out. I personally don't see the big deal.
