Rides and YouTube

I just got back from WDW. To help prepare my DD7 for the rides, we watched a lot of the potentially scary/intimidating ones on YouTube. She felt very good about that -- she was more comfortable deciding what she wanted to ride and what she'd skip. We ran into a problem, though: we'd seen a video of Test Track, so she thought she knew what to expect, but videos can't give an accurate portrayal of the motion of a ride. Going on a ride that she thought she could handle (but was actually terrifying) ruined the day for her, and also undermined her confidence.

That sucks. Test Track also scared my 5 yr old. We have to watch youtube videos of Haunted Mansion and the crocodile at Rainforest Cafe every night before bed LMAO. Otherwise it's a fight to get my boys into their beds

Funny you posted this today - DS4 and I just watched some YouTube stuff this morning. He's decided against R&Rcoaster, but so far, the rest is good. As if, lol.

You Tube is nice, but it can be misleading.

The YouTube for Soarin is great. Being on it is TERRIFYING.:scared1: :scared1: :scared1:

BTW DW loves Test Track, but she was terrified by BTMRR. So you may want to watch that.

Guess I have a strange 5 year old....She ABSOLUTELY LOOOOVVVEEESS TT. She rode it 3 times in March and wanted to go on again but the park was closing.:lmao: First run...WHHHHOOOOOOOOOOOOO the whole way thru. Young college age guys in the back were laughing at her reaction.

As for YouTube videos. They only give you a general idea of what an attraction is about. You cannot get the true gist of a ride until you ride it yourself. Only you know your child and the reaction they may have to something scary/silly/etc. Good way to do it is for the parent that is closer to the child take a spin on it solo and if you feel your child can handle it go for it. Just think, first time, enjoy the ride....Second time-get to enjoy your kid enjoying the ride.

The reason I said closer parent (that would be me around here) is that my SO tends to be oblivious at times and kinda has the video gamer mindset and not the small child mindset..... well I guess at times that can go hand in hand:rotfl:

This sounds like my DD5!! She adores TT and will tell you that it's her favorite ride! Unless of course she decides at that moment that Everest is her fave! She loves all of the crazy rides and even thinks some of the others are "tame" in comparison! Gotta love those wild girls!

You just never know what your daughter is going to like or dislike until she rides the ride!
So sorry that your DD was upset. I see quite a few upset riders when we visit each time and I just feel so badly for them. I get sick on those wild rides so I know what they are going through.

I never knew you could view videos of the rides on you tube! Wish I knew that 2 years ago when my then 4 1/2 year old(he's now almost 7) was big enough for Tower of Terror! He insisted going on the ride and kept saying he could handle it! When he got off he said "phew I can breathe now!" he held his breath the whole time we were on the ride! It really scared him and he says he will never go on it again! I knew I should have gone with my gut instinct. I kept saying don't let him on it, to myself but i felt so bad because he was begging to go on it. Maybe if he had seen a you tube video on it, he would have changed his mind before going on it!

We've watched several, but it would be nice to have a higher quality video than You tube...

We have been watching the rides on YouTube to prepare our 8 year old for our upcoming trip to WDW. He was afraid to ride Haunted Mansion, but since watching the videos of it, has decided to ride it.

I just come across these yesterday and even though the quality isn't the best, these are great to watch. I never would have thought.... As someone who's been to Disneyland too many times to count, I'm dying to compare the same rides....I found videos of Space Mountain at both parks both shown with the lights on... very interesting.

I'm excited to be going on my first WDW trip in December. DD will only be 10 months old so I'll be using baby swap and fastpass whenever possible.
