Rider swap without FP

This is my first time using the rider swap. So, my husband and will be traveling in 2 weeks with our 3yr old, so of course we fastpassed Frozen. But we really want to do Soarin. I'm planning to go straight to Soarin at rope drop. My question, can all three of us wait in the regular line and get a rider swap when we get to the end? Do they give it to you at the beginning? If I do get a rider swap, does that mean that hubby waits in the long queue or does the rider swap mean FP queue?

If your child does not meet the height, he cannot go in the line. With rider swap, you take the too short child up to the entrance and ask for a rider swap pass. The first person goes through the regular line if no fast pass. The second person and child wait somewhere else or go ride something else. When the first person is done the second goes through the fast pass line using the rider swap pass.
