I thought I had done my research on DTD and all the shops. Not so much! Today, I saw a post about Ridemakerz where you can build your own custom remote control car. OMG!! Now, mind you, I have girls (8 & 10), but I am sooo excited about this! I'm hoping we can do this as a family activity that DH will really get into. :woohoo:

Does anyone have any photos of Ridemakerz? How about a price list or an idea of what this is going to cost me?

Oooohhh!! I'm getting more excited every day! Thanks DIS for being such a wealth of knowledge!! :yay:

We have not done the one at Disney, but did do it at Myrtle Beach with my 5 year old DS. He loved it! Price depends on how much stuff you add to the car, also if it is a remote control car or just a regular push car. I don't remember the exact amount, but plan for $40 on the lower end (that was non remote car and only a few add ons, did not go crazy). I think the remote adds another $25 or so to the price.

Check out their website for a better idea of pricing, you can build a car and price it out.

Like Flipper, we've been to the one in Myrtle Beach, not DTD.

I recommend not paying for the remote control. We got it for the cars we made (we made 4:scared1:) and they all stopped working within a few weeks.

Just like Build-a-Bear, it's the accessories that kill you. Wheels, stickers, spoilers...it adds up!

Don't forget there are 4 batteries not 2. You can only see 2 of the batteries so make sure you replace all 4 or it won't work very well. Also, batteries are expensive there and we ended up replacing them twice. Much cheaper if you just bring a 12 pack from home.

I can try to post pictures tomorrow. Both my boys loved it. We opted to let 7 yr old get remote, but not 2 yr old. Older boy got fancier base obviously. Little one got s more basic base. We limited how many " extras" and they shared one sheet stickers. We spent $84 after tax and they are still playing with them. Remote still works but it's only been 2-3 weeks.

Definitely replaced Lego as their favorite store

Anyone know if they accept Disney gift cards there? I'm sure DS is going to want to build one when he spots the store.

I got online last night on ridemakerz.com and checked out prices. The site even let me "trick out" my own car as if I was going to order it online. It seemed awfully expensive for a RC car, but maybe a great idea for a family project in DTD. I think DH would have a good time doing this with the kids, and we could get it out and play with it at rest stops on the way home. I'm thinking this will be a family souvenier this trip!

Anyone have pics of one you have done??

We did this in Whitemarsh MD when they at a Ridemakerz, but now I think they only have them in Orlando and Myrtle Beach (maybe LA too). We have 2 girls about the same ages - made 2 cars - cost 100 dollars total. We had the basic cars plus remote control. We did not upgrade the tires etc... I have seen other peoeple spend 200 dollars for 2 cars, depends on what you get.

They take them out and play with them every once and a while when the weather is nice. They take AA batteries.

Have fun.

saw that the store will be open in its current location through 4/30. Does anyone know if it is just relocating to another area. My son is wanting to do this when we go in May and will be disapointed if they are closed

This was on their Facebook page:
" Don't worry; we are not closing down :) We will still have a SHOP you can visit on your vacation and we look forward to seeing you there!
March 8 at 3:33pm"

I heard rumors that they are moving. Not sure if they will be closed for a while for the move, but I hope your DS gets to make one in May. My DS is already talking about the next one he is going to make this summer (Myrtle Beach location).

We did the one in DLR last summer and my then 16 year old DS loved it! However it was very expensive. About $75 when it was all said and done. He didn't go over the top on accessories either. As other have posted the remote costs alot. I know another poster said their's stopped working, which is terrible. We got our last July and luckily it is still going just fine.

I read in a trip report here something about liking them on facebook and getting a $10 off coupon...we plan on doing this in MB in a few weeks.

About the stopped working ... I thought one of our stopped working as well and I took it to Ridemakerz in Myrtle Beach (we go there every year too!) .. and there is like a "hidden" battery part - takes double As... but you have to open it up in a certain way to get to it. The replaced those batteries and wa la it worked. If you can take it back to a store and they will help OR look for those "hidden" batteries.
