Where did you hear that? I just find it strange considering that Disney has other dark rides that have single rider lines set up (Rock n Rollercoaster for example) and routinely splits groups as needed to fill empty seats.

Maybe it was different years ago. I had a "stranger" seated next to me on Space one time, in 2002 when I was there. I suppose the change was after that.
