Does anyone else notice or know why certain areas of DL have, shall we say, a malodious smell?

It seems we get wind of wafting stinky air and we wonder what from (no, it is not from humans). It doesn't seem to coincide with any restroom areas so we are a bit confused.

Well, I've noticed that the water doesn't smell all that great in the Disney area. Sometimes the water coming from the faucets and shower at the onsite hotels nearly makes me ill...really sulfuric and just gross.

And it's now linked completely in my head to the smell of the DLH and PPH shampoo smell, so I can't even let that shampoo be used in my house...so many Mickey head top bottles, but so useless in the bumber-house.....

If you ever want to get rid of any mickey top bottles, you can send them to me. :) My son would think that was awesome on our next trip!! hehe

We were just there yesterday and we noticed a yucky smell on main street near the partners statue. We realized it seemed to be coming from the drainage/sewer thing (my mind is blanking on what you call that - you know, that thing along the edge of the sidewalk where the water goes when it's draining off the steet). You would think they could work some disney magic to get rid of that type of smell.

Last year when we were there, DH and I thought the entrance to the Winnie the Pooh ride in Critter Country smelled like cat pee. I don't know if it was the plants or what, but there was a strong odor - exactly like cat pee.

I believe the word you're looking for LavenderPeach is storm drain, or curb, inlet. They collect drainage and should be separate from sewage (big difference). That said, bear in mind that everything that ends up on the pavement at Disneyland gets power washed and ends up in the drainage system where it sets until the next big rain event flushes the system. If stagnant water sets in an inlet with all that junk in it, it will start to smell like sewage or garbage; especially if it's particularly warm.

Not trying to hijack your thread, but this brings up a question I've often pondered. Typically storm drains release into some sort of waterway, ie lake, river or ocean. With all the power washing they do to keep things clean, is this water being treated before its discharged into a waterway? Not to mention all the water they are using to wash everything off. I know Disney as a whole likes to promote environmental consciousness; so I'd be very surprised to find out they were doing anything harmful, just curious how they deal with it.

Sorry for the bit of a rant, I've recently been dealing with these types of issues at work a lot. Hope I've helped answer the riddle.

It probably was cat pee from the DLR cats that roam the parks at night,or hunt baby ducks by day.

I have often noticed the smells in the parks, thinking it was people-related. It is a sulfer smell or a cat-pee like smell, but it is too wide spread to be cat pee. I have also noticed a cafeteria-smell (can't describe it) in Blue Bayou and Cafe Orleans. Also the water in the GCH rooms can be quite stinky and I have had to use bottled water to brush my teeth at times. I can literally smell it coming out of the drain in the hotel rooms without the water running. I would think in the parks they would use an oder neutralizer of some type.

Of the times that I have been fortunate enough so as to visit Disneyland, I have not ever detected anything stinky. I have been fortunate that way, and with much relief to my olfactory senses. I don't take kindly to bad smells. Which is the reason why I have recently decided to take a shower at least twice a week now. ;)
At last count, there were 32 horses being stabled at Disneyland. I have never ever smelled such. And believe you me, I am an expert at detecting that particular combination of scents. I don't know how Disney keeps all of those horses a secret, but yet, scent wise, one would never be the wiser.

I heard some time ago that Anaheim was having a sewage issue...BIG TIME!! I heard it was going to take a pretty long time to fix!!

I believe the horse stables are behind the toon town area. Whenever we ride the gadget coaster I can really smell them!

I have noticed a really icky smell right outside the entrance doorway (only on the left hand side mind you) to POTC while waiting in line quite a few times. :faint:

The horses are stabled behind Toon Town. Other than riding the train around the park, I don't normally spend any time or very little in that area. Which would explain why I never smell horse anywhere.
I like the smell of horses, and I even do not mind the smell of horse poop. :) Which by the way is much better to say the least in comparison to cow poop. Elephant poop is way worse in stink in comparison to cow poo. Ok so now that concludes todays lesson is poop 101. Yes one can count on me to get the scoop on poop issues. :rotfl: :scared1: ;) :lmao:

Yes we were noticing that today. Peeyew! We also smelled it below at the fountain under the plaque where the lines seperate up the ramps. :(

This is the exact place I smell it too, AND I smelled it once while eating at Blue Bayou. Talk about something that ruins your meal! woo! :sad1:

LulusApple...now that you mention it, we did notice it on the way up the ramp a time or two as well. But usually the line is moving through there so the upper level stood out more in my mind. ick Have you ever noticed it on the right side up above?

Oh no!!! How horrible that would be!!

or it can tie into a street main.
