DVCLiz - they had some weird puppet float, with the puppets singing. There was a little house on the float, and they stopped the song, and Rick Astley came out to sing the song. I'm sure it will be up on youtube soon.

I believe they must have known because Rick's name was in the opening credits and they mentioned that there was going to be a surprise during the puppet song.....so yes I think they knew.
