Rhaspody question.....songs disappeared?!!

My daughter got an mp3 player for Christmas. It came with a month's free trial of Rhapsody. She downloaded a huge amount of songs during this time. Her mp3 player worked perfectly. Well, Rhapsody was not compatible with either my son's mp3 or my cd burner so keeping this was never going to happen. I called them on the 25th to cancel our membership. I have no idea what happened, but now when she goes to play her music, all the songs that she downloaded are not working!!! Some odd error message comes up on her screen (something about her subscription and syncing her music again )). How can this happen? They can't control the music once you have it downloaded can they??? Has this happened to anyone else??

I figured I'd ask here first because I really don't feeling like calling India!!

I've heard that with many of those sites, if you don't continue paying every month, you will not be able to play the music. Basically, you're renting the music--you don't own it. That's a huge reason why I prefer iTunes myself--they do restrict it to 5 computers, but there's no monthly subscription, so if I buy the music, it's there for me to play forever.

They can't control the music once you have it downloaded can they???

i could be wrong, but i thought rhapsody was a subscription streaming service and once you stopped paying for the subscription - you lost the music. as opposed to something like itunes where you actually download the songs.
