Summary

We stayed in the Oak Manor section from 1 October - 12 October and had a wonderful stay; we would definately return for another trip. Happy to answer any questions.

Check-in

This was quick and they also accomodated our request to move to a location closer to the main building. There was an initial problem with our room keys not working. Concierge service was helpful several times during our stay.

Room

Our room was clean and properly serviced every day prior to our midday break from the parks. On the second day we received towel animals. We also had a multitude of towels to enjoy for swimming etc after we left a note requesting more. We were very happy with the decor.

Grounds

The grounds were relaxing (and after spending some time tripping around other resorts on quiet afternoons we found we were very satisfied with the themeing - far preferring it to that of the Contemporary Resort for example). We swam several times in the nearest quiet pool, which was well maintained and a comfortable temperature. We used the washing machines/dryers three times and had no problems.

Dining/Bar

At first the foodcourt looked limited after having stayed at Pop Century, but we ate at all the stations during our stay and didn't have a bad meal. The big sundaes were a great way to cool off on a hot day and were a dessert using a counter service credit. I had three during my stay, and on the third the girl in the bakery recognised me and went nuts with the toppings - it was very cute with the halloween sprinkles. The cashiers at the foodcourt twice saved us money by suggesting we switch which drinks we were going to pay for out of pocket/with dining credits. We never had a problem with queues. The drink stations were never out of order (although I did wish that they had slushie machines).

We didn't try Boatwrights. We did spend several evenings in the bar with Piano man Bob though - what a hoot! (And didn't you know that everyone else in the bar also came from New Zealand?? ;-) ) Bar had a decent if generic drinks selection, service was fast.

I'd recommend purchasing the large bottles of water from Fulton's General Store (look to be about 1.5 litres) with snack credits if you don't like the taste of the local water.

Transportation

I had been getting quite nervous prior to our trip after reading numerous complaints on these boards about the bus transporation. Either we got really lucky for 11 nights or they've really cleaned up their act. We only had waits for longer than 5-10 mins three times during our stay, each time late at night. We did not have to stand on the bus a single time. We also enjoyed the boat to Downtown Disney a couple of times during our stay.

Glad to hear you had a great time DH and I are leaving on the 22nd for our 25th weeding annv. I can not wait to check out the hotel and see piano Bob

So Glad you enjoyed your stay at POR.

We were there last month and were also very pleased with the resort.

How long does it take for you guys to get to Florida from New Zealand?
Just Curious!

Glad to hear this...how close were you to the bus stop?

Our room was at about the mid point between the main bus stop at the foodcourt/store/check-in buildings (I think they called it the south depot) and the depot further north behind oak manor. I had a significant ankle injury right before my trip and was too proud to use any assistance (such as a wheelchair or walking stick). Walking at a slow steady pace it took around 2-3 minutes - we always used the south depot. For such a large resort, it always amazed me how few people we would walk past on the paths; it really felt very peaceful.

Glad you had a good trip! We love Bob!!!

Bob is the best!!!!

Isn't he great!! Hilarious to see all the guys in the bar lie on their backs and wave their arms and legs in the air, there was an enthusiastic crowd each night that we were there.

Congratulations on such a significant milestone! I hope you have a really wonderful holiday to celebrate. Don't forget to wear the anniversary badges - it was neat to see so many couples there celebrating. There were lots of newly weds in the parks when we were there too.

Good to see another happy PORian :-)

Well, for me it takes an hour flight within New Zealand, then 11.5 (there) - 12.5 (back) hours to San Francisco depending on which way you're going (the difference is to do with winds and the earth's rotation).

Then there are the domestic US flights. We flew Orlando to JFK to San Francisco on the return leg - which is what, 1.5 + 5.5 hours? (A little indirect but we got a good price on JetBlue, and the captain turned off the $5 surcharge for movies on the jfk-San Fran leg) The return leg from Orlando to my city was therefore a total of around 20.5 hours flight time plus stop overs. So it takes a while but is definately worth it.

I use the flying time as a chance to catch up on movies that I haven't had time to see in the theatres. I arrived back from San Fran today, and managed to see Die Hard 4, License to Wed, Evan Almighty, and a New Zealand film which I forget the name of, on the San-Fran to New Zealand leg.

This was wonderful! Thank you so much... We are going to be staying at POR Dec 8 - 15 and our only other WDW experience was AKL (which we absolutely LOVED!). After looking at some pictures and reading about POR, I was starting to feel like this was going to be a mistake. Good to hear some specific information.

One thing: I am nervous about the exterior entrances - motel style is what it looks like. Anyone have any trouble with lots of noise or disturbance outside their rooms there?

Thanks for any information you can share to help this worrywart calm down!

One thing: I am nervous about the exterior entrances - motel style is what it looks like. Anyone have any trouble with lots of noise or disturbance outside their rooms there?

We went 9/06 and we were uncertain about how motel-like this was going to be, but it was for the most part fine. We never heard any noise from any other rooms or even outside. The main problem was the bugs. It was like the mating season at that time for these crazy black and red bugs that look like fireflies without the light. They were everywhere! We were told by castmembers that it only happened 2 weeks out of the year.

What we did like about entering our room from the outside was that if you faced the river like us, you had a fabulous view. Our room looked right out onto a Gone With The Wind-like staircase (we were on the 2nd floor), that opened out onto a beautiful grass area with a great fountain and the river behind, with main house just across the river. I would be very choosy about room location because it can really be a long walk from the parking lot.
If you didn't make reservations for a waterview ask for one at check-in. All we said was, "..could you give us a pretty view?"
Make sure you take the free river boat ride to Downtown Disney. You get to see the rustic and natural part of Disney like these unique Treehouse-like condos they use for some of the castmembers. And the drivers let your kids be honorary captains.

So glad to hear you had a great stay! We will be staying there next month so hearing others reports of the resort is building up the excitement!!:yay:
