First a bit of a rant. I know the new seating policy has done a lot to avoid the mayhem of earlier times. But it isn't quite perfect. Here's how it went for us:
We arrived for our 8:00 ADR's at about quarter 'til and after valet parking the car (a DDE perk!) we went to the second floor check-in podium. There was no one there save the two CM's and so I thought--this is pretty good. But you know how that goes. We learned that there was a 1/2 hour wait from our ADR time, but the CM suggested we have a drink while we waited. I thought she meant at the Outer Rim, but no--since we had ADR's we were invited upstairs to have a drink at the bar or lounge. We went on up and guess what--not only were there no bar seats left, but there was a crowd of people THREE DEEP standing all around the bar. And no seats in the lounge! We couldn't even get NEAR the bar to get a drink, and no one was waiting on the few lounge tables. We finally managed to spot two unattended straight back chairs sitting up against the wall, and that was where we spent the next 1/2 hour --watching the servers trying to make their way back and forth through that sea of people in the bar area.

OK. That's over. Now to the meal. Our server was Gary (whom we had before) and he did a wonderful job as usual. I was able to find Anchor Steam among the beer offerings while Mrs U wasn't quite sure which wine she wanted. Not a problem, as she was offered small samples of the two she had finally decided on, selecting the Angoves Claire Valley Reisling.
At the CG I almost always order a flatbread as an appetizer and this night I was in luck--BBQ pulled Pork, with Tillamook Cheddar and Cabbage Fennel slaw. Delicious!! Reminded me so much of the BBQ sandwiches with slaw (the ONLY way to eat a BBQ sandwich) I used to get in a restaurant back in Baltimore. MRs U's appetizer was equally as good--Chilled European White Asparagus with Smoked Salmon, Mache Lettuce, and Egg Vinaigrette. She cleaned the entire plate, even using some of our bread to soak up that vinaigrette from the plate. It was that good--.

Entrees came next and both were right on the money. I had the Columbia River King Salmon with fingerling potatoes, vidallia onions, and Orange-soy butter. Mrs U had Swordfish filet, which came with Fennel Red pepper compote, cranberry beans, and tomato-olive vinaigrette. We shared a bit of both fish and agreed that they were the best fish enteees we've had in some time. Cooked right too-not "rare" as many places seem to want to do.

Dessert next--I chose the Coconut Panna Cotta with Passion Fruit Gelee' and MRs U had Valrhona Chocolate and Strawberry warm chocolate cake with molten center, house made strawberry ice cream, and strawberry sauce. Truly a chocolate/ strawberry lovers delight and probably the better of our 2 desserts.

This was one of the best meals we've ever had at CG, and one of the best we've had at WDW. The meal took just under 2 hours--we were seated at 8:30 and finished dinner at 10:15. I already reported in the Kids and Clothes report that the place was crowded with children (the most we've ever seen at CG) and the dress code was NOT enforced.
We're probably going back again in December--I can't think of a better spot to begin a WDW vacation than at the California Grill.

Last time I was there I was all worried about the dress code and then when I get there there's men in jean shorts and women in bathing suit cover ups. I was shocked because I had heard so much about the dress code being enforced.

Great review though!! Did you get a seat that had a view of Wishes?

No. We really don't even bother with that anymore. Just too easy to get up and go out on the deck. Our table was on the observation deck (lounge side) of the restaurant, but not close enough to a window to see really well.

Excellent review! :thumbsup2 I completely agree about the chaos before you are seated. :sad2: The second floor check-in podium only solved half of the problem. Yes, people without reservations can't go up to the restaurant anymore, so it's less of a zoo than it used to be. But come on! There is hardly any room up there for people to wait for their table! I think they should put in an open bar on the second floor by the podium, and keep people down there until their table is ready.

On to the food! The flatbreads are always a good choice at CG! Mmmm. Almost as good as Jiko's flatbreads! (OK, maybe a tie!) :goodvibes The fish entrees sound heavenly. :cloud9: Thanks for the review. I can't wait to hear about some of your other meals!

Waiting patiently to go back to California Grill in 4 months!!!

What day did you go? I went on a Monday and did not encounter any kind of crowd or wait. I know that on Saturday's and Sunday's it's crazy. I'll be there in 27 days but we're again going on a Monday night so hopefully it won't be that bad.

Saturday night. And you are right--it is less crowded on other evenings.

Thanks for sharing that great review! CG is our fave place and we can't wait to go back. That flatbread sounds really good!

Great review. Thanks. We loved our recent dinner there as well. We went after the fireworks were over, so found it quite sane ambience-wise.

Excellent review ~ Thanx for posting.

Thanks for the review, everything sounded delicious. We have an ADR there for our upcoming Sept trip. It is on a Friday night, but now I am thinking maybe we should switch it to the Monday night.

Do you have the option to wait at the Outer Rim? Will they give you one of those little pagers that lights up when your table is ready? I don't mind waiting a little for a table if I can sit in a relaxed atmosphere and sip a drink. Although the CG lounge area sounds like it would be good for people watching.....

Were all the people in the lounge waiting for tables, or were some just sitting in the lounge having drinks? I have always wanted to just get a drink there, but didn't know if you were allowed up without an ADR.

Do you know if a CM named Ron is still waiting tables there?

Sorry for all the questions!:goodvibes

Gary is a great server. One of our favorites.

Thanks for the review. I haven't been to CG in a couple trips, time to go back. The food is soooo good that it makes the chaos worth it. And we always find it chaotic.

I'm thinking I better start making ressies for our Fall Indulgenge Trip.....

Great review, I love CG but DH hasn't wanted to go there the last couple of trips. I guess I'll have just to eat vicariously through you, lol. :)

Wilderneslodgelover:
Can't help with Ron--we usually ask for Gary when we go. I'm not sure what the pager range is from the CG. And I'm trying to remember if we got the pager AFTER we went up, or when we checked in on the second floor(???) I'm thinking it was after we went up--. I usually put Mrs U in charge of the pager:goodvibes
Since no one was waiting on the lounge tables, it was hard to tell if they were "lounging" or just waiting. I do remember one group of 6-7 people did get up and go to a table, but before Mrs U and I could even take fair notice, another group (from the standing bar crowd) had swooped in and those seats were gone.
Again--I thought the new policy was not to let ANYONE up unless the table was ready, or there was a seat available at the bar or lounge. Letting folks like us (with ADR's) up w/o seats available probably isn't a great idea. A nice gesture, but had we not found those two "wall chairs" we would have had to stand the whole time, or go back downstairs.

Great review, Uncleromulus. Sorry to hear about the difficulty being seated though.

We just had dinner at CG this Saturday. We dine early to escape the crowds and rarely wait at all for a table. No wait this trip. Our reservation was 6:10 I think.

I had that BBQ pulled pork as my entree and oh, it was good!

Thanks for the wonderful review, Uncleromulus!

Last time I was there I was all worried about the dress code and then when I get there there's men in jean shorts and women in bathing suit cover ups. I was shocked because I had heard so much about the dress code being enforced.

I experienced the same thing last year. We always have dinner at CG, but last year was a bit dissapointing because of the huge chaos and people in bathing suit cover ups, tanktops and jeans shorts. The food was excellent as aslways and you can't beat the view. But, dare I say it, I'm skipping CG this year and try another restaurant instead.

Thanks for a great review. We are looking forward to our dinner at the CG in June.

Great review!

We were there in November (party of 6) and found it to be sub-par. We had to wait 1/2 an hour for our table which was fine since we were in no hurry. I've found the beer in the lounge is just as good as the beer at the table :goodvibes

Unfortunately, at dinner things went a bit down hill. The service was mediocre/poor and the food was 50/50. 3 of us had very good meals, 3 of us were unhappy. One person returned her appetizer 3 times before they got it right.

We'll probably give it a year off and try again in 2008.

I had a great meal there two weeks ago but one thing really struck me as wrong.

I hated the white paper on the tables. They had table cloths with a large sheet of white paper over it. I asked our server what was up with it and she said that the manager thought it was great. I told her it felt cheap under my arms and I disliked it to the point that we discussed how much work it would take to remove it and then continue with our meal.

At the table next to us children were given crayons to color on it. I really do not think this is the kind of place that should be catering to children over the adults.

Our meals were nice, well served and the cheese plate was fantastic but the paper needs to go!

Oh great this was supposed to be DH and I's nice romantic night out while my parents watch DD. We have always wanted to go and though the food sounds great. The ambiance sounds a lot more casual than we were hoping. Paper table cloths for coloring is great at the Macaroni Grill, not so much at the California Grill. We are going in mid-Sept. so I am sure with the free dining crowd it has the potential to be worse. Now I wish we would have chosen Citricos, although the menu at CG appealed to us more plus the firework viewing at CG.
