(warning, this got kinda long). Before our cruise, I scoured the boards for reports on the Disney Atlantis Aquaventure, so I thought I'd share our experience now that we're back. Yes, it's expensive. But the room at Comfort Inn was running $298 plus taxes and resort fees, no transportation, and no lunch. Plus with the Disney excursion if we didn't make the port, we wouldn't have been charged.

We met in Studio Sea at 9:15. There was a liability release form and tickets on the desk in our cabin when we boarded the ship. We were supposed to bring the form to the meeting, some forgot, but they did have extras. One person from each party has to show everyone's Key to the World card and photo id for the adults. We were given a Pluto sticker to wear. Once everyone was checked in, we followed a DCL person holding a Pluto picture down to the gangway. The captain announced ashore time as we were heading down the stairs. We were given wristbands and lunch vouchers and escorted to the buses. Not one person tried to get us to buy stuff. This was a huge plus. I know it's the way it works but it makes me uncomfortable walking past all those people yelling at you. The bus wasn't big enough for everyone in the group, but another pulled up right away.

We were let out at the Coral Tower. A guide met us and walked us to the park area. It's a pretty good hike through the gift shop and casino portion of the hotel, but not too bad. We each got a towel and were told to leave it on a chair and that chair would be ours for the day. (They have really nice chairs with awnings.) By this time it was just a bit after 10 am.

We saw the beach area. It was very nice, but the beach was closed due to high winds. The water in the slides was too cold for my taste, but the kids were fine once they got used to it. We could've seen the aquariums, too, but time was short. We didn't feel like it was crowded at all. We did notice crowds picking up after lunch when we saw 2 large groups from another ship being escorted in. Oasis of the Seas (I think that's the name....the REALLY big one) was docked as well as 2 other ships and the Wonder.

We had lunch at Pisces. It's over near the beach access. Not as convenient as some of the other locations, but well worth it. The best fried chicken I have ever had in my life. I'm in Alabama. We know fried chicken. We each got a breast, thigh, and leg, plus fries and a canned drink. This would have cost $16 each. There were other places to redeem the vouchers, but this was the only one with fried chicken. Other choices were hamburgers, hot dogs, chicken sandwich, turkey wraps, pizza and a salad. Most everywhere had the same stuff. It's listed right on the voucher so it was easy to decide where to go.

I can vouch for the lifeguards. :rotfl: At one point, the lazy river forks. We were trying to go to the right to go up the Power Tower. My kids made it. I was heading toward the rapids area on the left. Not wanting to lose my kids, I foolishly tried to get out of my tube. Bad move. Now I didn't really NEED a lifeguard, but according to my DD, "he went into bionic mode" and came after me. He fished me out and walked me to a calmer portion. He was very concerned and wanted to check me over for cuts and bruises, but I assured him nothing was bruised except my pride. Another lifeguard grabbed my kids in their tubes and sent them down the rapids so that we didn't get separated.

If you let your kids go on a slide, be aware that the printed map is deceiving. They don't "pop out" where you think they will.

The return bus runs every half hour from 1 pm-5 pm. (All aboard time was 6 pm, we had 5:45 dinner, so that cut our time some.) On our bus ride back, the driver gave us a nice talk about the things we were passing and some history of the Bahamas. Very interesting.

We did have to walk through that little flea market area to get back to the ship, but it wasn't bad. Time from getting on the bus to boarding the ship was 30 minutes.

Having now done it both ways, I can say that at least for this time of year when the Comfort Inn is so expensive, I would definitely recommend the Disney excursion. We just felt nice and secure and didn't have to deal w/getting a taxi ourselves, checking into the hotel, etc. Now if the savings were significant, I'd probably stick w/booking at Comfort Inn.

That said, the 3 night cruise flew by. We've done Atlantis twice now. We are lucky enough to get to sail again later this year. We are staying onboard and saving the $160 pp.

Thank you for the info. We are going on that excursion in 3 weeks and this was very helpful. I was a little concerned when so may posts mentioned the Comfort Inn, but getting our own transportation for 9 of us seemed like too big a hassle. I can't wait!!!!

The Aquaventure excursion is $160 per person???

It boggles the mind, doesn't it? Children are cheaper, but my youngest is 10 and therefore pays adult prices. btw, I assume "tidefan" refers to Alabama? DH was able to watch the Alabama spring training game in the stateroom. Another man in our group watched it from Diversions. I thought it was a shame to waste CC time watching football, but...

Lizavance, I hope you have a wonderful trip!

Yes! That's why a lot of people book a room for the Comfort Suites which is next door and which gives you full access to Atlantis. You can often get the room for under $200, or at least in that general price range so rather than paying $640 for a family of 4 (adult age) you can get by with more like $300 (by the time you add in a taxi & lunch).

Thanks for the great review! That does seem a little steep at $160 pp. :scared1: I'm thinking that the family needs to go to the public beach for the day!! :lmao:

I just wanted to say, thank you very much for your review.
I've been going back and forth in my mind and w/ dh about what to do and I think you sealed the deal for us!

Thanks a million!

Just wondering as you said the slides were cold, how was the lazy river? I'd really hate to get there in early December and feel the water was too cool to enjoy myself. I'm one of these people who is annoyed by the way Disney has made the resort pools cooler than they used to be.

I thought the lazy river was chilly. It was really windy, so that didn't help. The trouble is, when you go in a chilly pool you're cold at first but you adjust. I was fine as long as I was completely in the water. What happens w/the lazy river is you're half out of the water in a tube. During the calm parts, I'd get all toasty in the sun and then wham, hit a rough patch and get splashed by cold water. I know what you mean about the Disney pools; when we've gone in the winter I actually prefer it to be really cold outside when we swim so that the pool feels toasty. I don't know if they heat the water at Aquaventure.

I wasn't miserable, but it certainly wasn't the basking-in-the-sun day that we had the time we were there over Labor Day.

Yeah, I really debated spending that much for the 3 of us to have a few hours there. The first time we actually got a free night at Comfort Suites using DH's frequent traveler points. It was an absolutely perfect day (well, there was hurricane coming, but other than that, heehee). One of my favorite memories of all time. So my girls REALLY wanted to go back. I knew nothing could compete w/the first time, but I also knew they'd be so disappointed if we didn't. But they both agree that next time we'll stay on the ship.

You're welcome! That's why I wrote it. I didn't find a lot of detailed info about it prior to our cruise. Mostly just people saying why Comfort Suites was a better deal. And it is in certain situations. For the 3 of us, it was about $60 more going through Disney and since DH wasn't w/me, I thought it was worth the extra for the peace of mind. I'm pretty timid.

Any pictures??:goodvibes

Yep, I did a review on this years ago. (We did it the Disney way too and after reading this review it sounds like not much has changed from when we did it)

Here is my review with LOTS of pics! It starts on Post 50.

HTH! Have fun! :thumbsup2

Totally unrelated, but we will be with you on the MNNSHC October 30th!!! Your children are beautiful!

Can you answer two questions for me??? So you didn't have to listen to a long tour once you got to Atlantis you were free to go??? I had heard there was a 1/2 hour to hour talk before you were let free???? Also, you don't have to sign up for a bus to come back, take any of them??? Doing it on our own I liked being able to just leave when I wanted but if you can take any of the busses back on the 1/2 hour that would work.We got a $176 CS room in November but I know when we go next Easter, it will be much higher than that and with a party of 3 it will likely behoove me to just do the disney one. Thanks so much!!

:wave2: Hi Donna!

Thanks so much! :goodvibes I haven't looked at those pics in a long time and I couldn't believe how little they are! (and how little I am..LOL that's what all this cruising will do to ya!)

Looking forward to cruising with you in a few short months!

:) Jen

Since I'm here (not trying to hijack the OP's review) but I can tell you scootch that we did have about 1/2 hour long walk/mini tour right after we arrived where they walked us in through the grounds and showed us where we could eat with our vouchers and where to get towels and lockers, etc. You are walking while they are talking. My guess is you probably might be able to break away from that if you wanted to. :rolleyes1 And yep just any bus on the way back, no need to sign up, just show at the bus stop (make sure you at least make the last one) LOL!

Thanks for all of the pics and the trip report- I am trying to convince DH that we should do this excursion. :goodvibes

'

:lmao: will be sure to do that.

The lockers are not far from the pool or the beach. That is one thing with doing the CS way, I didn't look at a map ahead of time to find the lockers and instead worried about my stuff..... then found the lockers as we were looking for somewhere to change before heading back. Next time we will definitely get a locker.

Just off the Wonder last week. We did Atlantis the Comfort Suites way with no problems whatsoever. If anyone has any questions, I would be happy to answer them. We booked at a rate of $200/night. With taxes and add ons, our total was $268.
