Review of Boma, breakfast

Because I had two breakfast vouchers that I wasn’t sure what to do with, I had the idea to go to Boma for breakfast ($14.99) during the long Memorial weekend. Even though we had Disney Dining Experience, getting the press pot of Kenyan coffee would make using the vouchers a better deal, so we decided to use them there. As Mike doesn’t drink coffee, we figured that I would order my pot, drink it quickly, and then he would order one for “himself.” It took a bit of cajoling to get Mike to agree to go, but since he wanted to get to MGM early to see the Star Wars motorcade, it wasn’t too difficult, and we made an 8:30 AM priority seating. We’d been there before for breakfast, and had a great experience.

Being our fourth visit to Boma, we knew our way around the Animal Kingdom Lodge and quickly found our way to the host stand at Boma. We said that we had a priority seating, but the woman at the stand filled out a seating slip without even looking us up. It was fairly quiet as we entered, so I suppose it wasn’t necessary. We were brought over to the left hand side of the restaurant this time, to a table for four up against the booth seating. I always feel a bit awkward in that kind of seating arrangement, as I feel we’re bothering the people next to us when we get up, or spread our bags out. There was no one next to us at that moment though, so we were all right. I definitely liked the small alcove on the right hand side better; I would request that if you want a quieter meal.

We pulled out our vouchers, and our server quickly came to the table, picked them up, and asked us what we wanted to drink. Her name was Kelly, and she was reminiscent of both Sharon at Chef Mickey’s, and the other Kelly at Garden Grill – very friendly, cheerful, and helpful. Great! I asked for a press pot of coffee ($5.99), and Kelly told us that she believed they had stopped allowing the vouchers to be used for a press pot. She went to check with the manager, and it was true. Mike and I debated using the vouchers for smoothies instead, but we ended up not using the vouchers this time, and I ordered a press pot anyway. I love my coffee very very strong! We both also ordered the Frunch juice, and it was nice to see Mike come away from his usual orange juice. The Frunch is very sweet, I suppose partly due to the grenadine that they add. At that, we got up to check out the morning’s offerings.

I have started to learn my lesson at breakfast buffets: have plates of sweet and savory separately! I like syrup with my sausage, but definitely not with my eggs. Because the carving station was first on the right, I started with the savory plate. Around the carving station on the right were veggie breakfast pizza, poached eggs in sheeba (the tomato sauce from dinner), and meat veggie pizza. The veggie pizza had eggs, cheese, spinach, and tomatoes. The crust was crisp, a little too crisp for not being a thin crust pizza, but it was light on the cheese. This would make a good choice for a lighter meal. I don’t like poached eggs, so I didn’t try the eggs this time. The meat pizza had an even crisper crust (read: hard), but the toppings were delicious: eggs, cheese, bacon, and sausage. Not a choice for a lighter meal! At the carving station itself were ham and pork loin. The ham was the best part of the entire meal; it was moist, tender, and very flavorful. Earlier on, when it was quiet, I received a much larger piece than when it was busier. I put the Boma mustard on top, and it was perfect: just enough spice and a hint of sweet. Coming around to the left of the carving station was the biscuit and sausage bake, and the bobotie. The biscuit bake was one of my favorites in the past, and it was very flavorful today, with sausage, potatoes, other veggies, and color from turmeric, I believe. The only problem with it is that it was ice cold. Not just lukewarm, but ice cold. I did notice the Cast Member checking the temperature of the bobotie later on, but it didn’t help the biscuit bake.

To the right of the carving area was the hot cereal pot. That morning they had quinoa, pap, and oatmeal. Quinoa is too bitter for me, and the oatmeal in the past was too watery, so I passed on this station. Next came pods with traditional American breakfast foods. First up was raisin French toast, which I thought was fairly dry (even with syrup), but Mike enjoyed. Neither of us tried the pancakes, but the waffles were light and crispy, and the bacon was cooked well and not too fatty. The sausage was thick and juicy, and was reminiscent of the sausage at the Kona Café (is it the same?). The potatoes with Afritude were actually spicy for once, and were cooked just right that morning. On the same pod was a pot of scrambled eggs, which looked fluffy, but neither of us tried them, either. Mike and I had planned on sharing an omelet from the omelet station, but by the time we made it over there (around 9:30 am), there was a very long line. For fillings, they just had traditional omelet fillings including cheddar cheese, onions, peppers, tomatoes, bacon, sausage, and potatoes, among others. I believe it was the most popular part of the buffet, as even the carving station wasn’t that busy.

Moving on, there were two fruit stations, with the first one having whole fruit and yogurt. This included green and red apples, oranges, grapefruit halves, beautifully red strawberries, and berry yogurt. I had the yogurt on top of my waffle, and it was tart without being too sweet, with chunks of fruit throughout. It went well on top of the waffle instead of syrup. On the next station was cut fruit, with cantaloupe, honeydew, watermelon, grapes, and pineapple. I only tried the pineapple, and while it looked good, it wasn’t ripe at all. It was all attractively arranged and cooled on ice, and would also make a good addition for a healthier breakfast.

On the next pod were the dry cereals, including raisin bran, fruit loops, granola, and corn flakes. After the dry cereal station were mini muffins, with chocolate chip, blueberry, orange bran, and banana. The chocolate chip ones were wonderful, soft and moist with a ton of chocolate - they didn’t even need any butter or other spread. There was another pod of hot foods from before randomly placed after the muffins, but it was handy when the omelet station line ranged past the hot foods on the other side. Don’t forget to check for this if one side becomes very busy. Following that was a station with bagels, three types of cream cheese in mini tubs (plain, strawberry, and onions and chives), margarine, and three different types of preserves. The bagels are usually stale, so I would try squeezing them with the tongs before selecting one. I love using the strawberry cream cheese on the non-stale bagels.

Finally, at the end of the buffet, were the pastry stations. This time they had four different types of danishes (cherry, raspberry, apple, cheese), almond bear claws, pecan sticky buns, croissants, corn bread, cinnamon buns, banana bread, and golden raisin scones. The almond bear claws were the best of the bunch, with a dense, sweet filling, and a moist pastry on the outside. The pecan sticky buns were also excellent, not stale as they had been previously, with a ton of pecans on the outside. The danishes were good, but just ok – not a lot of filling, and the pastry was a little dry.

Service was excellent that morning; Kelly was cheerful, happy, and always ready to get us what we needed. She even brought us to-go cups for our Frunch and with some additional coffee! I love that Disney buffets will do that for you, as I like to walk around with a coffee afterwards. There still seemed to be plenty of seating by about 9am, but around 9:30 am it was very busy. The buffet was backed up, and there were many people sitting in the lobby. I would recommend either an earlier or later priority seating.

We enjoy many of the offerings on Boma’s breakfast buffet, though we do wish they were a little more adventurous. At times, it doesn’t seem to be different from any other buffet in regards to the food, but the atmosphere is great. You can even go see the animals out on the different savannahs, before or after breakfast. We will go again in the future, but as I always say, not before we check out many of Disney’s other options!

Detailed review! We appreciate it!::MickeyMo

Enjoyed the review!
I always like that pork loin at the carving station. Better than the raw roast beef that one usually finds at breakfast carving stations.

Great review, as always! :D
