Here is my review of the rides and shows at USH. I've been there 3 times in the last year., I only live about 30 minutes away. First time was the VIP experience. If you have any questions about VIP, let me know. I will try not to spoil too much, but there are some ...

Harry Potter rides
The hippogriff is the only outdoor coaster there, and it's lame. The closest I can think of is coastersaurus at legoland, and the coastersaurus was better I think. It's also very short. If the wait is more than 5 minutes, and it often is during the afternoon... skip it.

Forbidden journey is cool, not really thrilling except at a few points. You wear 3D glasses on this one, but make sure not to have anything loose on you. The castle you walk through is far cooler than the ride. There are lockers free available, which they require you to use if you have any bags. I wouldn't wait more than 30 minutes. Take advantage of the early admission and get this one out of the way if you can. The ride is on rails, and the first time a woman in the next car started screaming to get off the ride, so they had to stop the ride for a bit. This ride does move you around quite a bit in all directions.

ollivanders is neat and I would recommend going through this small attraction. It's mainly a way to get you to buy a wand, but it's fun to watch kids cast spells.

Simpsons ride: nicely themed. No 3D glasses. Good storyline too, and the length is just right. The entire simpsons themed area is awesome. This is a motion ride simulator.

Minions ride: nicely themed. 3D glasses. Fun storyline, probably near the top of the list. This is another motion ride simulator. The minions area is nicely themed including the silly fun land.

Walking dead: this is just a haunted house walk through. Not really scary, but too much for young kids. Good theming in the waiting line, once you get in to the actual attraction, it's just one scary zombie after another that try to scare you. I guess that its biggest weakness, no real variety.

Transformers: honestly, I enjoyed this the most from all the rides. It had an engaging story for a ride, and had lots of interesting scenes. It is just a motion simulator, although it does move on rails from one scene to another. 3D glasses ride.

mummy: this is an indoor rollercoaster. It launches you after a small themed area, stops, then launches you backwards. And then it ends. It is boring and very short. In my opinion it's the worst ride there, except maybe for the hippogriff, but that one is for kids, so I'll give it a pass. This is also the ride that for me at least, was the most uncomfortable in terms of being jostled about in my seat. Not very smooth. Skip this one.

Jurassic park: high points for theming, probably the best of all I theming in USH, with hogwarts
Castle in a tie. The ride itself is a typical ride that gets you wet, in many cases soaked, with a good drop near the end.

Animal actors show: it's cute animals doing amazing stunts with some audience participation.

Water world: best show at ush. Some really great stunts. Recommend this one over all other shows. If you sit close, you will likely get wet, splash zones are clearly marked and accurate.

Special effects show: meh. Maybe it's because I've seen it each time, but it's always the same and not too interesting. This show needs to be revamped. They were still advertising a movie that came out a few months ago for some reason. If you are a movie buff, you likely know this stuff already. It does have some audience participation which is chosen before the show begins.

Shrek: 3D glasses. It's a typical 3D movie with theater seats that jostle you about and spray water at you, and a couple other things. (Called a 4d movie). The waiting room before the show is interesting and sets the scene for what is to happen during the movie.

Studio tour: the VIP experience adds so much to this tour, so I can't view the normal one as anything but kinda boring. The best part for me is King Kong. The fast and furious part is fun, but I never really liked the movies. The guides do their best to keep interest up, but the jimmy Fallon parts are just dumb. The earthquake scene is neat, and at least to me, more engaging than the fast and furious part. If you are going for the studio tour and can afford the cost, the VIP version is so much better, however if you small kids, they may be bored during parts of the VIP version. Note that you will be splashed a few time with water depending on where you are seated throughout the tour.

Restaurants. Only neat one is three broomsticks, all the others are nothing special. There is no character dining except during VIP experience lunch, and even that wasn't anything special. I would definitely go to 3 broomsticks again. Line can be long though. Most restaurants have decent theming especially in simpsons land.

If you have any questions about VIP, let me know
I thought about doing this a couple times, but from other reviews I've read, it sounds like you are mixed with other people who bought VIP and majority vote rules which things you get to do/see. Was that the case? I wouldn't want to pay for VIP as a group of 2 or 3 and be with a group of 6 that wants to everything I don't want to do and nothing that I do want to do. For example, I don't go on motion simulators. If the group goes on one of those, what do I do during that time? Grab a snack or just wait outside the ride for them?

Thanks so much for this info. We are going in a couple weeks, so this is really helpful. Why was the woman screaming to get off the HP ride? Is it scary?

The hp ride can be scary, some of the imagery you see as well as the motion. You are moved around in all directions, but you are never upside down. , although close to it.. It didn't bother me, but I can see why some people may freak out.

You are generally put in a group of about 10 people for VIP tour. Since you get front of the line, you are guaranteed to go on every single ride. As far as shows, on the VIP tour, we didn't go on shrek and waterworld, but there was plenty of time after the guided part of the tour ended to watch them, and you still get front of line anyway even if you are not with tour. If you don't want to go on a ride, you could stay with guide or arrange with guide to meet somewhere. They are very accommodating. Note that the majority of rides at ush are motion simulators, so if you don't like them, you would be skipping most of the rides.

In my case, the first thing we did with VIP guide was studio tour. After that, I suppose you could go off on your own, but you would miss the lunch which was very good food. Or you could leave the tour after lunch and go off on your own. The VIP studio tour can only be done with your guide, same with lunch (if only because the restaurant you go to is not easily found since it's not marked on map), everything else could be done alone.

Note that my tour guide didn't really ask us what we wanted to go on, he just told us what's next, and what to expect. All of us went on each ride. He gave us ponchos for the Jurassic ride. The tour guide doesn't go on rides, he/she holds on to our backpacks or bags on rides, so that we don't need to use lockers.

What is added to the studio tour for VIP tours? All the things you actually talked about are parts of the normal studio tour, so I'm curious about what's added that you think make it so much better! :)

First off, it take about 3 hours, and you get off the nice small comfy Tram multiple times.

Highlights include stopping at a Studio that is dressed for filming, the Property Warehouse, a walk through the New York Streets area, the Six Points of Texas and the European streets. (all depending on what is actually being filmed that day). Usually a minimum of three stops. Plus you go through all the attractions like King Kong, Fast and Furious, etc. Also easier access to the tour guide to ask questions during the tour. Alsp the tram is stocked with free bottled water.

The basic plan, if you get there near opening.

Park in Valet Parking (included), but a tip at the end is nice.

Then a nice breakfast spread (buffet) at the starting room.

Then depending on the day or the crowds, there are two main options, either straight on the Tram Tour, or check out Wizardly World. (Which includes special access to the Wand shop, which is only for VIP guests), that wait can be over a hour or more for everyone else. Then do the other.

Then the Gourmet Lunch (think cruise ship buffet with action stations).

Then usually the Lower Lot and its rides. (By the way, no need for lockers, the Tour Guide will hold your bags) and then the rest of the upper level, and some shows will give you backstage access after the performance.

So if you compare the price of Front of the Line and the meals and parking, you are paying about an extra $100 for the day. And you can upgrade to a Annual Pass at the end of the day (credit is the current one day at the gate GA ticket).

Not cheap, but ends up being a great day.

What dark beer said.

I didn't want to spoil too much, but since you asked.
Some details:
The tram is much smaller, it's just your group usually, or maybe one more VIP group.
To be clear, where you stop and what you see, just like the regular tour is controlled by what shows have live sets.

You get to stop multiple times during the tour and walk around sets, and can ask your guide any question. If I remember correctly,,there was no jimmy Fallon videos, which was a plus for me.
Also, for King Kong and fast and furious, since the tram was so small, we all got perfect views of
Plus the additional stops at the prop warehouse(this is the part that may be boring for small children).

Differences from. what darkbeer said:
Our group did ollivanders with other guests, not just VIP. We didn't have to wait too long though.
We didn't get to see backstage stuff at the shows.

The minion ride had a major stoppage before we got on the ride, so we lost at least 20 minutes on that. As well, this was when the woman was screaming on the Potter ride, so we lost some time there too. I think both affected why we couldn't see waterworld during tour. It was on guides itinerary, but he had to make changes.

I think it is important to note that "Everything is subject to change", as things like rides break down, etc.

Universal Studios Hollywood has a fairly unique problem in the ongoing film production on its backlot. It has forced certain rides to be designed to prevent "screams", such as Jurassic Park facing the way it does, and that the drop itself is indoors. WaterWorld sometimes can't use its fireworks, even though they are designed to make little noise.

As for the trams, both the Regular and VIP, the routes can change multiple times a day due to filming. (They have green cones to use to help direct the trams, plus the drivers get a brief before they drive that day, also now electronic maps, and radio communication for route changes). Each area has multiple roads that can be used if needed. Also, there are times where the Tour Guide has to get off the microphone to avoid ruining the sound of a filming. So it is nice for the "regulars", as you are never sure what things you will see.

But Disneyland also has the issue, but not as often, but they will close down an area for filming if needed.
