Revenge of the Mummy - reassurance for coaster wimps

I spent most of our first day at US trying to psych myself up to do the Mummy. I knew I'd hate myself if I didn't, but I get really nervous when I don't know what to expect. It didn't help that Matt had decided he wasn't going to risk it - he's not afraid of rides, but he suffers badly with motion sickness.

By 4.30pm, with the kids egging me on, I made up my mind to do it. We left dh at Finnegan's (funnily enough, he didn't seem too bothered  ) and entered the Express Line at around 4.45pm. Even with FOTL staying at PBH, there was quite a wait and I nearly wimped out several times, but the kids were having none of it. When we got to the loading area and saw that the restraints were just lap bars, not shoulder cages, I relaxed a bit.

I'm so glad I did it - no stomach losing moments (just enough 'thrill' that you feel that you've done a thrill ride - kinda like BTMR, but much better, or like R'n'R without the inversions) and the effects are just cool, not scary.

Those people who don't like coasters tend to fall into several different categories - I don't like big drops (won't do Jurassic Park, don't like Splash Mountain although I do ride it, have done ToT 3 times, but probably won't ever do it again), but I'm fine with speed and inversions. There are a couple of biggish drops on the Mummy, but I loved them - you come out of your seat slightly, but you don't lose your stomach. . The 'backwards' part of the ride is just a short, gentle drop - a bit like parts of Pirates of the Carribbean and Splash Mountain.

We wanted to ride again straight away, so we collected dh (just finishing up his third pint of Guinness - another benefit of staying onsite :p ) and he rode with us. This time it was a walk-on, go figure. The next day we rode at 11am (again with FOTL) and it was a walk-on. Universal are currently operating a policy of one ride per attraction for resort guests before 3pm and then as many times as you like after that. I'm guessing that's why we got unlucky at 4.45pm (I think we queued for about 30 minutes), but not at 11am. There was a lot of Express Line abuse at this ride, too. As you enter the building there is a CM swiping your room key card/collecting Express passes. The line then passes along next to the single riders and standby lines and we saw lots of people ducking under the ropes. They need someone checking again at the loading area like they do on MiB and Spiderman.

Hi Deb

Thanks very much for your detailed description of your experiences on Mummy - I am the ultimate in coaster chickens & I am not sure if I will go on it or not! I was going to make a post on the board asking for opinions.

I am still not sure though - I think I am more of a chicken than you!! I like simulators - like Star Tours. I love Spiderman - the best thing at universal by far! Mission Space is my new favourite at Disney & I love Splash Mountain (when I finally got up the courage to go on it!!). I also like Big Thunder - BUT BTMRR is the only 'coaster' I have ever been on - and I realise it is so tame many don't consider it a coaster at all. I have never been on Rock N Roller Coaster, Hulk or any of the other Universal biggies - I am even to nervous for Space Mountain!!

Sorry about all this detailed back ground - I just wonder if you like I would be OK with Mummy or not - how coaster like is it? It sounds like it may be too much for me!!

I welcome any advice or opinions,
Claire

it sounds a bit like the Valhalla ride in Blackpool (except it will probably be 10 times better!)

:D Deb - I've shown this thread to Darryl (remember, he who doesn't "do" coasters, but did managed Jurasic Park . . . twice:crazy: ). He is encouraged by your description - and better still, is even thinking of joining Katie and I on RnRC next year:hyper:

Thanks, you've done what Katie and I haven't been able to do over the last 6 years - you must have a more trusting face than us::yes::

Thanks Debbie. I feel much better about it now. I can go on coasters but get in a bit of a state about it before hand!
However, your description of it makes it sound like I'll be OK. Thank you!!

Love Verity.xx

Come off it Lisagirly!!
Valhalla could compete in any park in the world,Its put The Great back in Britain!!
One cool ride an hour from my house!

Thanks for that Deb! :)

Reckon I'll be able to do The Mummy now I've read what you've said - I love RNRC, ToT and all the big drop rides but have a HUGE problem with the Hulk and the other biggies!! Pete wants me to ride the Hulk with him next year and I've said the only way I'll do it is with a paper bag over my head so I can't see the drop - I've a horrid feeling he's going to make me do it that way now!!!

It's not the drops it's the take off at speed I can't deal with. Only did RNR once.........never again! I have heard there is a fast take off on The Mummy also.

Just as the end there's a fast take off but this is nothing to worry about and nowhere near the RNR experience.

Ride is great - just wish it didn't break down so often
