I spent most of our first day at US trying to psych myself up to do the Mummy. I knew I'd hate myself if I didn't, but I get really nervous when I don't know what to expect. It didn't help that Matt had decided he wasn't going to risk it - he's not afraid of rides, but he suffers badly with motion sickness.
By 4.30pm, with the kids egging me on, I made up my mind to do it. We left dh at Finnegan's (funnily enough, he didn't seem too bothered
) and entered the Express Line at around 4.45pm. Even with FOTL staying at PBH, there was quite a wait and I nearly wimped out several times, but the kids were having none of it. When we got to the loading area and saw that the restraints were just lap bars, not shoulder cages, I relaxed a bit.
I'm so glad I did it - no stomach losing moments (just enough 'thrill' that you feel that you've done a thrill ride - kinda like BTMR, but much better, or like R'n'R without the inversions) and the effects are just cool, not scary.
Those people who don't like coasters tend to fall into several different categories - I don't like big drops (won't do Jurassic Park, don't like Splash Mountain although I do ride it, have done ToT 3 times, but probably won't ever do it again), but I'm fine with speed and inversions. There are a couple of biggish drops on the Mummy, but I loved them - you come out of your seat slightly, but you don't lose your stomach. . The 'backwards' part of the ride is just a short, gentle drop - a bit like parts of Pirates of the Carribbean and Splash Mountain.
We wanted to ride again straight away, so we collected dh (just finishing up his third pint of Guinness - another benefit of staying onsite
) and he rode with us. This time it was a walk-on, go figure. The next day we rode at 11am (again with FOTL) and it was a walk-on. Universal are currently operating a policy of one ride per attraction for resort guests before 3pm and then as many times as you like after that. I'm guessing that's why we got unlucky at 4.45pm (I think we queued for about 30 minutes), but not at 11am. There was a lot of Express Line abuse at this ride, too. As you enter the building there is a CM swiping your room key card/collecting Express passes. The line then passes along next to the single riders and standby lines and we saw lots of people ducking under the ropes. They need someone checking again at the loading area like they do on MiB and Spiderman.
