DS (10) and I need to create a costume for him to portray General Mad Anthony Wayne for a class project. The instructions state we can spend a nominal amount of money creating this costume, but it has to be primarily created from used stuff. So...a trip to Goodwill is ok, but nothing new.

I don't know where to begin!

Suggestions?

Google the general and find out what he looks like :)

Put him in anything. I'm going to guess that nobody will say, "Hey, that's not something General Mad Anthony Wayne would have worn."

This....maybe a hat to tie it all together.
Well, if the OP just wants to "phone it in", rather than actually participate in the spirit of the assignment, then maybe she should just pin a sign that reads "Mad Anthony Wayne" on her son and be done with it.

OP, the General would have worn the same clothing that George Washington would have (they were both Revolutionary War generals). Look for a navy blue coat that you might be able to cut away to look like a waistcoat. Khaki pants tucked into tall boots similar to riding boots if you have them, otherwise a flat black shoe and white knee-high socks and rolling the khakis to the length of knickers will also work. A woman's white shirt with a frilly ascot for his shirt and then for the powdered wig, attach cotton balls and cotton strips to an old knit hat using hot glue. Tie the ponytail with a piece of black shoelace.

DS had to become John Adams last year, and I'm guessing it would be somewhat similar. Went to goodwill, found a men's jacket with a longer tail, cut several inches up the side seams and "sewed" it down with stitch witchery and my iron. Took the pieces I cut off and again "sewed" them on to make the very wide labels that were common. Swapped out a few buttons and the jacket was perfectly period. Also got a pair of dress pants that I cut off, put in some elastic and created kneepants (found those instructions online). He wore them with soccer socks. For a hat, I found a wool brimmed hat at a discount store ($3) and stitched the brim up in three places to create a tri-corner hat. We also hotglued some gold cord around the edge of the hat to give it a fancy appearance. Probably spent $10-$15 and he looked great.
