Never having stayed on site I am very new at this. We are staying at WL in Sept. How much are the mugs, what can you get to drink and where from.

Thanks

The last mug I purchased was around $13. You get to chose from different types of soda, lemonade, hot chocolate, coffee, and tea. Water is also available from the soda machines in the food court. The mug makes a great souvenir.

Also, the mugs are now generic (all the same design) and can be used at any of the other resorts you choose to visit during your stay.:thumbsup2

But... you aren't REALLY supposed to, you are only SUPPOSED to use
it at your home resort.

Not that anyone will notice... just my jimmney cricket showing :rolleyes1

Home resort use was the rule when the mugs were resort specific.
WDW has changed the wording on the mugs and signage.
The new signage reads resort beverage station instead of at the resort where they were purchased.
The mug reads resort beverage Islands.

I think WDW made generic mugs which can be used at different resorts during one's stay in responce to all the guests who had split stays and felt the one resort use was unfair to them.

PLus having a mug with the year written on it helps cut down on guests who would bring the mugs back year after year.

Just my 2 cents.

Obviously you didn't read your own picture carefully. The sign CLEARLY states that you can only use the mug at the resort beverage station where you purchased the mug. So if you bought the mug at POP, you can't use it at ASMU!

Does AKL have these refillable mugs? I sure hope so!

Read it SLOWYLY, It says and I quote "Free unlimited refills available from the beverage station until the end of your stay, in which the mug was purchased." there is some punctuation missing. It means it can be used at any resort beverage station during this stay only, you must purchase a different one on your NEXT trip.

ETA: I had to read it 3 times before I realized there was missing punctuation.

Then they shouldn't have made the refillable mugs "generic"..

Or they would have a bar scanning system or something equivalent if they were so concerned about guests not using they at other resorts....

I would guestimate that now that the mugs are generic, most guests are using the mugs at other resorts..What is the monitoring system?

Perhaps "official" policy states that mugs should be used at "home resort" but it is obvious by the number of posts on this subject, that the majority of guests after paying around $13.00 for a mug are "taking the liberty" of refilling at other resorts....

IMHO, Disney is really asking guests to unnecessarily"double dip" into their wallets when they have split stays!

:wizard: When we were at CBR last summer we were lamenting the switch to generic mugs and saying how much we liked our CBR mugs better....the CM who was ringing up our lunch said "you can bring your old mug and reuse it"...I asked her if she was sure about that and she said you can bring your old mugs back and reuse them! Of course, I couldn't be bothered packing the old mug, but clearly others do. I've even seem people at the beverage station filling up empty water bottles....isn't that kind of like stealing:confused3

It's a confusing sign.

Did they mean to say "Free Unlimited Refills available from THIS Beverage Station until the end of your current visit"?

Or, are they saying "Free Unlimited Refills available from ANY Beverage Station until the end of your current visit"?

Either way, the clear part is that you get free beverage refills until you leave.

Here is a photo of the wording on the new generic refill mugs.

The only Resort where the Year of a Million Dreams mugs can not be used is at Coronado Springs since their dining locations are not operated by WDW, so because of that they still sell their Resort logo mug.

If i had not read this discussion, my assumption would be that the mugs can be used at any resort. My conscience would feel just fine using it if I were splitting stays or visiting at another resort, based on the generic design and the signage. Fountain drinks are dirt cheap. My in-laws own a convenience store where I worked in my younger years. They are not losing any money, trust me. During our recent stay I saw many people filling any type of container they had at the drink stations. (They also made a terrible mess, in some cases!) I don't think Disney is worried about the folks who buy their mugs abusing them.

Ahhhh.... But WDW is worried. In Fact in 2002 WDW was thinking about using
Bar codes for their resort refill mugs. I do not know why WDW did not install the bar codes for their resort mugs. I think perhaps it is because a bar code has to changed daily and then guests would have to buy a new bar code each day.

From this Mouseplanet.com websiteJune,2002:

http://www.mouseplanet.com/mike/ref...icy_changes.htm

In an effort to rein in costs and increase income, the Walt Disney World Resort hotels are making some drastic changes to the extremely popular refillable mug program that may affect many repeat visitors to the resort.

[If you are unfamiliar with the program, you can read about it in MousePlanet's WDW Resorts from A to Z page under "Refillable Mugs."]

According to an article in the Orlando Sentinel entitled "32 ounces of soda not enough? Disney tries out self-serve refills," Walt Disney World is making large 32-ounce soft drink mugs available for free self-serve refills in Typhoon Lagoon. That's the good news. The bad news is that you can only refill your mug on the day of purchase. If you return to Typhoon Lagoon the next day, you can no longer refill your mug for free.

Disney has added a new UPC bar coding system to the self-serve refill stations that, for the first time, controls a previously unenforced policy. Although the refillable mug program has always been advertised as available during an actual length of stay that allows guests to refill their mugs during their trip, in reality, guests often brought their mugs back on subsequent trips to refill them free of charge. With the UPC code tied to a guest's hotel reservation, this new system closes this loophole altogether. That is, once your stay has ended, your mug is no longer refillable. Those mugs you bought on previous visits won't work next time you vacation at WDW.
Another loophole that may close with this new system is that you might not be able to use your mug at any other resort except at the one you are staying. For example, if you stay at one of the resorts for a few days and purchase a mug there, and then you move over to another resort for the balance of your vacation, the mug might not be refillable at the second resort. How will this new system be enforced? Once the UPC code system is fully activated, they can devise a system by which the fountains work only if an "active" UPC code is on the mug.

WDW visitors are already complaining that the new system is yet another line to stand in and just "more time-consuming nonsense cutting into [one's] vacation time."

Did you recently visit WDW and see this change in practice? If you have any first-hand knowledge or experience, please email me or Brian Bennett at brian@mouseplanet.com to provide us with more details.

Here is another article written in June 2002:

Disney Mug Holders, Beware

"The new system of computerized monitoring of fountain refills being experimented with at Typhoon Lagoon could tighten a rather loose policy at Disney's resorts. They sell 16-ounce souvenir mugs for $9.99.

Guests may refill them at resort snack bars unlimited times with soda, coffee or tea for the length of their stay. Cashiers sell the mugs and then are supposed to keep a watchful eye as guests get their own refills.

But some Disney World employees and regular guests say they take the mugs on repeat visits to the snack bars and fill up -- basically a lifetime of free drinks for one purchase. They are occasionally offered on eBay and at garage sales, testimony to their timeless value.

Cashiers say the mugs' designs aren't changed enough for them to spot old ones. But the new system being tried at Typhoon Lagoon employs a bar code that's read electronically at the drink dispenser and recognizes old mugs." [Orlando Sentinel, via Boing Boing]

Refillable Mug Policy Tightening?
According to the Orlando Sentinel, Disney is experimenting with a new computerized barcode system to be used in tandem with it's refillable mug program offered at their resorts. The program allows guests to buy a mug for each person in their party which then can be used for unlimited drink refills during their stay. The policy change could come as a result of Guests taking the mugs on repeat visits to Disney World to fill up on what becomes basically a lifetime of free drinks for one purchase.

Just my 2 cents.

Just wanted to add that when we were on the Magical Express in June, our driver gave us a whole speech regarding the refillable mugs. The way he explained it, we could keep bringing it back for future trips. I can't recall his exact wordings, but he said that the mugs no longer have dates on them, and they are no longer resort specific, so you can reuse them...then he added "Arent you glad ya'll are DVC member so you can keep comming back!!?"

We bought a mug, but hardly ever used it. It always seemed like a hassle to get a drink, especially at SSR..where the dining area can be very far from your room. Plus, we were on the dining plan, so our meals came with a drink. I just wanted to share my information...not stirring up any trouble at all! ;)

I've heard this from a friend who's actually an imagineer,

Apparently what they are working on is a system that is used with your resort ID. What will happen (in the very near future I might add) Is that when you purchase your mug during that current stay, it will have a sleek coding printed around the lip of the mug, in order to use the mug at refill stations when you press it up to the dispenser the machine will read the code on your mug. If its valid the machine will dispense the liquid of your choice into the mug, if its not the liquid will not come out of the machine. They will link this to your resort ID, and this is how it will work. :scared:

As we all know resort ID's have just about every privileged on them, they serve many functions, and have the dates of your stay printed right on them too. when you purchase this mug, you will show your ID (only when purchasing) your Individual ID will be swiped then the mug will be scanned. they will do this for each quest in each party. ( So if DH is getting a mug his resort ID will be swiped and his MUG will be scanned. DS's getting a mug, his resort id is scanned etc etc..) Because this bar code will be specifically linked to your RID, its only valid for your own use during your stay. There are also going to be Mug refill stations only. for all of you who are wondering "what if I have a paper cup??" Also, the only other beverage you will be able to fill your mug with with out a scan is water. (becasue its FREE)

Also they have been discussing how to regulate mug rules, and apparently if you are cauht trying to fill your mug at regular station and its not a valid mug(IE a mug from your last trip) (because we all make mistakes sometimes! So if it was a valid mug but you were just not at the correct station))your mug will be confiscated and you will be made to pay for your drink. + they may place the incident on your DVVR, which to me is logical because you are stealing!!! This is also going to serve another purpose as well. Apparently they are going to be conducting and monitoring what the average guest is drinking and just how much use their getting out of their mug during the stay. Like a pumpkin, at the strike of midnight on your last days stay you mug will become inactive. Mugs will also be valid to use at parks as an additional privilege, (but this will come with a $$ higher price tag) Just another tool our RID will become in the near future.

I think this is another awesome Idea the imagineer's have cooked up. It makes me sad to think poor Disney has to resort to these measures. :sad2:

So for all you guys (and gals) out there who hate those repeat offenders.... dont worry their time is coming! for now, just feel proud that you are being an HONEST,DECENT, and RESPONSIBLE Disney guest!:worship:

:woohoo: :woohoo: :woohoo: :woohoo: :woohoo:

I also just wanted to say too, this posts about mugs and pools are getting nutty!! let find something else to talk about! Share the :lovestruc people!! Stop bringing up the silliness!

I agree.
I personally think it is a shame that WDW has to enforce the rules because they can no longer trust the integrity of their guests.
