Where can I find good (that will last a long time) reusable grocery bags from? Something that will hold a decent amount of grocery's in them. The stores in my area still give out the plastic bags (they break taking them out of the grocery cart:confused3). I just want to be ahead of the game and as a plus side not having to pick up my groceries that fall out of the bag (when the bag splits). TIA

All our grocery stores sell reuseable bags for about $1 or so. If I needed anymore, I keep considering some the Flylady sells on her site, but right now I don't need any more (and they're expensive, but I'm guessing they are nice based on the quality of other merchandise I've gotten from there).

Gee I see now they are only $10 - maybe I will have to get some of these! I thought they were like $20 a set.

Trader Joes, Walmart and Target have them for about a dollar each. We use our Target ones for EVERYTHING! taking snacks to events, towels for the beach, etc..My grandma gave us a bunch a couple of years ago by wrapping our Christmas gifts in them.!

We have a kajillion more that we have received free at fairs, home shows, community fairs, etc...I even have one I got free from a local bank that is insulated! They all seem to hold up well. I use them all the time, especially when we shop at Aldi's since you need your own bags there anyways.

You can get them about any where -- grocery stores, drug stores, Target, even Kohl's. There's also a bunch of Disney ones at www.disneystore.com -- I bought some of those for myself for Christmas.

I prefer the cotton canvas reusable bags because they can withstand regular laundering. I have about 5 from various places. I look for them when I am traveling... almost like souvenirs. I know. I need more hobbies.

Do they sell this type in the grocery store? Are they made like the ones you can get for $1.00 or so ( I know they will be more expensive as they are made from a better material)? I want something that can be washed and reused for a long time.

I have made them in the past, and I still have some of my homemade ones from DECADES ago. They have patterns at the sewing store. I know that my sewing skills are weak, at best, and I managed, so it can't be too tricky!!

If you are not handy, or lack the time, try your local healthy foods store. These are usually canvas, sturdy, and washable. More expensive, but worth it, less ending up in the landfill later.

My favorite store bought one is from Lassens. It is gusseted, canvas, and very nice. I think it cost about $8.

I like the ones from Kohl's. They are large, sturdy, and fold up (and snap) easily. I think they're around $2. Many of the ones from other stores are too narrow or don't have a flat base, so they're not very functional for me.

I buy the ones from the Disney store to use for gift bags or to use to tote hoodies or some toys for car trips, but I really don't think they would stand up to using for groceries.

I found some great canvas ones at GoodWill. I'm not sure they were originally designed for that, but they work great. I also have some from IKEA. Those are my favorite as they are both BIG and sturdy, and pretty inexpensive.

The ones from JoAnn Fabric are the BEST!! They're huge, have the plastic piece in the bottom and are sturdy for $1. I use them for everything, not just grocery shopping.

Can these reusable bags be washed - there was a show on tv not long about the health risks to using some types of reusable bags. For example, meat and milk leakage one week and then you reuse it for veggies another week. Just wondering how you handle possible cross-contamination?

I use these http://www.envirosax.com/

though a bit of an initial investment they are the best that I have found and I've been using reusable bags for some time. They are easily to refold, easy to wash and quick dry, comfortable to carry, compact when folded, well designed, durable and can hold up to 40lbs.

I honestly think its the best designed reusable bag I've used.

Was as normal, hang to dry ( the dryer just wears them out faster) and because they are a plasticy material they dry real fast. I dont wash the ones that feel like plastic or tarp ( the trader joes or Ikea) but the bags that are like a thick version of the white coveralls that you paint in. The ones that almost feel fabric, they wash great!

I am a grocery store cashier and I very much appreicate when people wash their bags! It makes packing them so much more pleasant!

I use these as well. It's easy to always have one in my purse even when I'm not specifically going grocery shopping. I always find uses for them. They hold a lot and are really strong. I love my envirosax. :)

I wash mine in the washer and then just let them air dry. They're rip-stop material, so they come out of the washer practically dry anyway after the spin cycle.

I make my own out of my son's ourgrown or torn up jeans/kahkis. They hold up better than the cheapie ones from the stores and cost nothing for me to make.

I have bags from all sorts of places, but love my Disney ones. When I visit the Disney store, I always pick up a new one, which ever one is on sale.

Just watch that the cashier doesn't fill them too full. I need to sew up some seams because a couple have tried to pack them tight and full.

I love being able to shop all day and not bring home a single plastic bag.

For the cross contamination, I do wrap meat in a plastic bag first. Yes, I know, this is defeating the purpose, but one bag is way better than 20 bags. I wash the bags as needed.
