We are getting new den furniture and I'm considering just having our recliner reupholstered since I can't find anything else I like. I like that it's comfy, swivels, rocks and reclines, but I'm ready for a funkier pattern (since I agreed to a boring dark brown leather sectional). The chair is 37" tall and 37" wide and it's currently microfiber (if that matters). Any guesses on how many yards of fabric it's going to take to reupholster this thing? I know it will probably cost me just as much if not more than a new recliner, but I just can't find anything I like because most recliners don't come with a pattern fabric option :(.

Any experiences out there....the good & the bad?

We reupholster everything -- learned it from my in-laws who have had the same couch for at least 50 years. Every few years, their designer chooses some new fabrics for it and the wing chairs.

Our couch is only about 15 years, and its been done three times. We also have a wing chair and a pair of arm chairs that we inherited from my in-laws. Prices vary drastically on both fabrics and labor, so ask around. I always use the same guy for the work, but my family room has some fabric that was $2 a yard at a church sale and some that was about $25.

Wow. That's awesome. I actually just found out, via a facebook post :goodvibes, that a girl I went to high school with, her husband is in the business and does stuff on the side at night to make extra money in addition to his day job. So hopefully I'll be able to get a good deal and help out friends too.

Is there a particular fabric you've found works best? This is my first go at this and I really have no idea where to start.
