Returning a rental car early

We need a car for 26 days. However, the price is $600 cheaper if we book for 28 days. I am inclined to book (through Costco) for the 28 days and simply return it two days early.

In the terms and conditions it states that returning a car early or late will result in extra fees. I understand the late part but the early makes no sense.

Does anyone have any experience with this?

This is a recent article about an early return resulting in an extra charge. It happened in Switzerland but explains the reason was a weekly rate was cheaper per day charge than the daily rate so returning early bumped it into the daily rate for the partial week days,

I was going to say, the 28 day rental would be four weeks. A weekly rental is generally cheaper than 7 days. So going to 26 days would be three weeks + 5 days.

I would not be surprised if you return early and they reprice to 3 weeks + 5 days vs 4 weeks. If they don't, bonus!
