Return without Receipt?

I had a similar situation as some posters here. I had two Nintendo DS games that I wanted to exchange that I had bought from TRU. My local TRU has really become a pain in the *** when trying to return/exchange items especially if it's from the electronics section. I ended up taking them to Walmart and received a store card with the value added to it. This is the first time I've even tried anything like this. I'm usu. good with holding on to my receipts and what not. I do agree that abusing a store's return policy is the reason why so many have made stringent changes. I have seen it happen during the time I worked retail. I must say that retail stores do take all of this into account, just a fact, not a justification.

To the OP, Merry Christmas and try Walmart! :teeth:

No store is going to give you cash back without a receipt. And only if you paid cash in the first place and it isn't too high an amount. Some stores make you wait while they mail you a check back for a cash purchase return.

Costco will.....but they can make sure you purchased the item by your membership number. So for this posters situation it would not help...but you can return to costco w/no receipt and get cash back. I did it today :)

Gotta love Costco...It's their customer friendly policies that keep me coming back!!!!

Most (if not all) stores, regardless of whether or not they can resell the item, consider this theft and an issue taken care of by the loss prevention department. This is why stores track returns by credit cards or your personal information, so they can find patterns. . . but it's the same crime whether you do it once or 100 times.

I would assume ipods have serial numbers since most electronics do.
Yep, iPods have unique serial codes and I would be willing to bet that Apple knows exactly which stores have in stock or have sold which units. When I bought my 30 GB video and went to register it, the site said which store I bought it in. The unit itself is even lists the city I bought it in when I go to "clocks" . . . it gives different time zones, and the local time zone is labelled "Columbus"

I know both our walmart & the close best buy indicated after Christmas that if they carried it it could be returned there, even if you weren't sure if it was purchased there. (Store credit I believe in both cases). Not sure if their policy will change this year or not, but have you ever seen those return lines on the day after Christmas? They are shoving those people thru as fast as they can!!!

Do IPOD's have serial numbers? If so it is possilbe that Walmart (or any other store) will know that it is not from there and refuse return. Even if they have the same UPC code.
When I bought my nephew his IPOD at Walmart they told me I need a receipt to bring it back. It does have a serial number that they scanned at the register.

I know that Home Depot will return without a receipt if you used your credit card to buy it. They can look up your transaction with the CC and put the return back on the CC. But you really had to buy it there.

Wal-Mart will let you make three returns without receipts in a 12 month period. I'm not sure if that means 3 items or 3 groups of items. But to answer the OP's question - WM will accept up to three receiptless returns in a 12 month period.

Does anyone know the answer to this? My son just had a birthday and he wanted the SW transformers. Well he got a couple of duplicates and some that were not duplicates but when we opened two of them they basically fell apart and will not stay together. Since two of them fell apart so easily I do not want to keep the others and the same thing happen. I do not have the receipts because they were gifts and I have 6 of them to return. I am guessing they came from Walmart because one they sell them there and two most people around here shop there. So if I return all six at the same time will they do that and will it count as one receiptless return? Hope to get an answer before I take them back tomorrow.

I had to do this for a gift just last month...I went to Target, though. Target told me it was 3 items per12 month period. They took my license to check and see if I had done it previously, which I had not. Maybe you could take back 3 and your husband 3??

I am not sure about Walmart, but it sounds like the same policy. Good luck.

Walmart Electronics Return Policy

ELECTRONICS
Computer hardware: Must be returned with any included software within 15 days of receipt.
Computer components and computer accessories: Must be returned within 45 days of receipt.
Computer software: Must be returned unopened.
Camcorders and digital cameras: Must be returned within 30 days of receipt.
GPS Units, Digital Music Players, and Portable Video Players: May be returned for refund or exchange with receipt WITHIN 15 DAYS.

I do agree that Walmart would be more likely to take back a cheaper toy, but I would be suprised to see them do it with a higher end (more highly stolen item) like an iPod. Guess you aren't out anything really to try...I am HORRIBLE with keeping receipts, that is one reason that I like shopping at Target because they can look it up by your credit card..though you have to be able to know which one you used.

Well, WM's out then! :)

I just have to say that I absolutely dread returning items to a store -even when I have the receipt! I just feel somehow shady, and that I should have been more careful with my purchase.

ETA: I only return items with a receipt. I don't have the kahunas to attempt a receiptless return. I am too afraid of being perceived as dishonest.

Yeah they do have serial numbers,,, Yesterday,, I went to the Ipod store and bought music for my daughters IPOD so she had it on the IPOD before Christmas day and I had to register the IPOD, and it showed up on my Itunes screen and it was exactly the right color IPOD,, It showed the PINK Ipod that I had bought her,,,so I would think they check out and scan all serial numbers?

Then a store that never profitted from the sale would be out the cost? Probably why stores have become so anal about returns.

Actually what it is is sadly people will take items off the floor and try to return them for cash without a reciept. It happens so many places. You might be able to exchange it or get a credit at say Walmart ect. But without a reciept I doubt it. Its generally considered proof of purchase.

What stores still give cash back for returns without receipts? :confused3

I know, I wouldn't have had a problem if they gave me a GC, i just don't need any more freaking candles....

nothing like looking a gift horse........

Anyway. If you can hold off until after Christmas, Wal Mart also does no receipt returns for cash back after the holidays.
Also, with the three returns youmust provide i.d.

No I don't make a habit of doing returns there, I just used to work there (many moons ago....)

I am answering the question, but I still think it is wrong.

This must be regional because my Walmarts have never given me cash back (nor would I expect it) for returning something without a receipt, and I have returned after the holidays.

I haven't actually made a retrn anywhere in a long time so I don't know, but I think the poster on the previous page answered it with the actual policy of the store

I've returned things at Kmart without a receipt but they have you pick any item from the store that is the exact amount of the item you are returning. You cannot give them more money if you pick something that is a greater amount.
Several times a year, my children receive gifts that we already have. I personally think it is rude to ask the giver for a receipt so I head to a store like Kmart, walmart or toysrus and usually I am given in store credit and the kids pick something they desire.
I don't know anywhere that gives cash anymore.
In fact, my sil gave me a sweater that was too small from Marshalls and she offered the reciept to me. They would only offer store credit even though she paid cash :confused3

I know Marshall's only offers store credit if the item was purchased more than 30 days prior to the return. That's happened to me a few times.
