Return without Receipt?

Does anyone know which stores will take returns without a receipt after Christmas? I bought DS11 a ipod nano 2g in St. Thomas at one of the ships recommended stores. It would be a hassle to return there, if they would even take it. I thought maybe I could get a instore credit at a customer service friendly store. It is a new generation. I just ordered the PS3, thus son will be very well taken care and not in need of an Ipod!

Then a store that never profitted from the sale would be out the cost? Probably why stores have become so anal about returns.

Is something wrong with it? If its not working properly you should be able to bring it to Apple -- if they can't fix it they will give you a new one.

I doubt you could return it for a refund in any store other than the one you bought it in. Even for a store credit.

I won't comment on that specific situation, but I can't even return something to target, that was purchased at target....I got a candle set as a secret santa gift and it is obviously from target because it has their logo on it....but I don't need any more candles, and they will only let me exhange for another item from the candle department.....

Save it for our next overly commercialized, supposedly religious holiday, Easter! Seems kids get big gifts like that in their baskets these days. Or you could donate to a charity for a kid who will never see a PS3 outside of Walmart.

:rotfl: I'm thinking valentines day!

Walmart would be your best bet... you'll get a store credit but that could be used towards PS3 games.

I got the PS3 at regular price at Circuit City. I was very lucky today on line. My kids didn't even ask for it as they knew the situation on release day. They have no idea that they are getting this so it will be special. It is a shared gift for two boys. I want to return the Ipod as the only get one big gift and they share it. I do not get them gifts on Easter.
My boys are Altar Servers, attend Catholic Middle School and Christmas is a very Religious event for them and our family.
Now, I just thought that if I returned it and got a store credit then I could get something else from that store, they could resell the Ipod and everyone was even. I was not trying to get something for nothing.
Now, why do I feel I have to explain all the above when I was just asking a simple question.
Excuse me for celebrating Christmas and giving gifts to my kids like most everyone else here! This is why I have been on this site for over 7 years and only have 1000 posts.
Merry Christmas - Our family sure is in the spirit!

You can also sell it on ebay to make most of your money back.

Niagra2- I am not religious at all and never attend church, but I sure do enjoy my gifts! That wasn't meant to be personal- just stating the facts.

Returning the item to a store other than purchased at is ok? Either return it where purchased, if even allowed, or give to someone else. As was stated earlier, this is why stores have become so limiting on returns.

Right. Regardless of how good of person you are, knowingly returning something to a place where you did not buy it is unethical.

Curious about the math...Would this logic be correct?

If someone bought an Ipod for less than normal (say $100, theortetically) , "sold" it back to Walmart for $150 dollars, then even if Walmart turned around and resold at $150 they are only recouping their cost, rather than making a profit. The profit was made by the original store, and in this case, by the person returning the item.

OK folks. The OP asked a question with a specific answer. Let's limit our answers to answering that question.

Yes m'am.

Sell it on ebay! No doubt you'll be better off doing that than you would if you even could find a store that would give you store credit. They are going to give you credit for the lowest possible sale price, I'm sure you could do better on ebay.

I'm seconding the ebay route. Even if you do find a store that will accept the return, keep in mind that many stores charge a restocking fee for electronic items, which is between 10-15% or more. (I think Circuit City and Best Buy get 15% but don't quote me).

Leaving out the ethics, you're likely to lose money on the return doing it that way. Even if you got it duty-free, you probably wouldn't have paid 10-15% tax on it if you bought it retail at home, I'd think. Unless your sales tax is crazy high. ;)

My son received a video game as a gift from his uncle that he didn't want (it was too young for him). The uncle lives out of state and didn't send a gift receipt - DS felt funny asking him to send the original receipt. I took it to Best Buy and explained the situation - they were willing to give me store credit for the price of the game (or an exchange). They have you show your drivers license and limit a no-receipt return to one per person per year.

As long as the ipod is in original packaging you might try it.

Walmart will let you do 3 returns a year w/out a receipt. Since ipod's usually don't go on sale and Walmart doesn't charge a restocking fee I think this would be your best bet. Walmart will make the money back when they sell it so no harm, no foul. I have returned things at Walmart for credit when I knew it didn't come from there. All were gifts that didn't come with a receipt and I didn't want to hurt anyone's feelings. I see no harm in returning it.
