Restrictions on Double Developer Points

The points have a 12-month lifetime (from date of purchase). They cannot be banked or transferred. You can book up to 7 months prior to your check-out date (i.e., there is no "home resort" priority with these points).

Since renting involves making a reservation with your points and then renting that reservation to someone else, I would expect you could do that with developer points.

Trying to use the waitlist with developer points can be a problem since all reservations using developer points must be done manually.

The latest news is that, in an effort to simplify the use of our memberships, double developer points cannot be transferred, rented, or used for any reservation. They can, however, be used to make a nice looking picture to hang on your wall.

I think much of the confusion is the result of new members being told that they can use the points immediately just like any other points, yet the document describing the points (received at closing*) states the rules as to how and when the points can be used.

* and we all read that document real closely, right?

When we asked MS about all of this they pretty much blamed our Guide for not knowing how the double dev points worked.

We just ran into similar issues regarding double DP's and after reading around here for some clues, what I read prompted me to go back and read my contract. Sure enough - there are restrictions. It was mainly the 7 month thing that got me and messed up my plans.

Gus if you have your document handy, can you please summarize what it says regarding the use of DDP's? I dont think all the restrictions we are seeing on these boards were listed in that document, but as I purchased 6 months ago, I may be wrong.

We joined DVC at the end of June and received 400 developer points. We were told that they had to be used within 7 months of our closing date (essentially by Jan. 28, 2008). They could not be banked or transferred. Not a use issue for us since we live in FL. We closed on a Sunday and on Wednesday of that week we made ressies for 4 nights at the GF with no problem. We have since made ressies with our developer points for SSR in December and the remainder was applied to our DCL trip in Jan. 08.
