Restriction Lifted to Pleasure Island

unless i am mistaken (and i was there two weeks ago, but it was late and i had had a few) PI no longer has any shops or food ( i thought the shops {the old t-shirt shop and memoribilia shop} were taken out or moved to DTD three years ago)...

one thing is better, thanks to florida's smoking laws, none of the bars have smoking inside of them any longer... they used to get terribly smokey

I can understand about not wanting to spend money in a club with a bunch of kids, but Disney's view is obviously different, since they do allow children in. Alternatives are to e-mail Disney explaining your view and try to make them change their policy, or go to the club on PI that does not allow children (I think at least one of them is either 18 or 21 only). Or, better yet, voice your opinion with your wallet, and find a club outside of the "world" that does not allow minors.

Yes, very cool about the new smoking laws! I love traveling to states that have the new laws (I know NY does as well, not sure about anywhere else!) It's amazing how nice bars and clubs are in the states that have the new regulations.

Now only if PA would enact the same laws...............

lol :yo-yo:

We were walking around (before the clubs opened) and there were a few shops there (not to many, unless we didn't see all of them) But they had tees, keychains, mugs, the usual. I can remember about 3 maybe 4. But I don't remember any food stops n such. But like I said, we werent there long. :)

Disney has so much to offer for families that it would be nice to actually have an adult venue.

I totally agree. After days of spending time at the resort and theme parks I really want to get away from other people's children. It is nice to have an adult entertainment atmosphere once in awhile. I really don't think PI is appropriate for anyone under the age of 21. They closed Videopolis (underage club) years ago because it was causing problems with teens and gangs.
I'd also like to have a drink without having someone's tot kicking the back of my seat or running around me.

benebire: as it turns out... pediatric training includes behavioral pediatrics, child psychology, developmental pediatrics and adolescent medicine... not to mention the fact that i have three children of my own... my job is as much about parents (and their parenting skills) and familial interpersonal relationships as it is the actual medical condition of the child... i get asked daily by families what my professional opinion is regarding very similar topics... i am hurt;) that you value your pediatrician's opinion so little...

good luck to you

This is exactly why I won't be taking my children to PI, and DH and I won't be going there ourselves.

Does that pertain to restaurants too? Here in NY there is no smoking in any restaurant and I was in a restaurant in Alabama a year or so ago and it was so gross eating and being able to smell cigerette smoke while you ate!

YES! YES! YES! No more smoking in Florida Restraunts! ::yes:: :bounce:
Only in stand alone bars, and only if the bar does not offer a menu. I think they are only allowed Pretzels, snacky things to be able to still be smoking.
Hooray!

All WDW restaurants are entirely non-smoking.

I could see taking your kids early in the evening and looking around, but I wouldn't stay too long. Certainly not until midnight to see the fireworks (which pale in comparison to the parks).

As long as Disney allows it, bring your kids anywhere you like. But know that I (and presumably other people as well) am in a bar. That being the case, I will comport myself accordingly - I will drink, I will swear, and, should I find someone worthy of such behavior, I will make out to the legal limit. I will do all of these things directly in front of your children, and I will not feel one bit bad about it.

I have to say you are 100% correct in what you want to do.... I have 3 kids of my own...11, 15 & 17. Guess what....they have seen 100% worse on TV...during the prime time hours and regular channels not just cable!! Hey... the 15 & 17 may have seen almost as bad in the high school hallways too (not the drinking but the making out).... I am sure you will not be nearly naked as they are on TV! If someone has an objection to what is going on, they are the ones who should not be there...they knew ahead of time what the atmosphere would be like & chose to go...don't hold it against those who have been going all along! If I don't want my children to see that ... I wouldn't take the chance of bringing them there.... I could take them to other places for a "family" atmosphere...... If I decide to go ...then I will have to accept what we see and not complain.... remember it boils down to your choice to go...no one is forcing you to....:smooth:

Honestly, I don't want to spend money to hang out in a club or bar with a ton of kids. It is nice for adults to have a place to get away from that, especially if they are somewhere like WDW with their families.

I've never been to PI, and if I do go, it would be without my 12 year old. I just imagined the place as a place for adults to have some adult fun, to be away from kids for a while. I think Disney is making a mistake opening up PI to children.

As far as admitting children, nothing has changed. You could bring children before, they just had to have admission. Alot of families use the packages with UPH, so they could have brought their children in before without paying extra.

I'm sorry...but I've been to Pleasure Island many times and I would never take my 9 and 12 yr old boys there. Its not an atmosphere for a child so to speak. Besides...its a bunch of bars except for the Adventurers Club...and maybe some things out on the pavemnet (but not much when I was there last).

City Walk is very different than PI. Oh yeah, I've done the Mardi Gras in New Orleans...its NOT quite that bad...but late in the evening...its not a "kid" atmosphere....its a fun place for the adults to be adults for an evening....:)

just my 2cents,

Arggh. It's a tough one. Just because it's Disney doesn't necessarily mean kid-friendly. I'm going alone with DS in July and won't be going to PI. When I go with my sister in January, you can bet we will (but DS will not be with us). The street atmosphere at PI (from what I've seen) is far from Bourbon Street, but neither is it Main Street. I guess I just wouldn't feel good about DS seeing me do a jello shot--not that he's never seen me drink wine or a beer. I kind of feel like it's part of my parental duty to model responsible behavior in all things and I don't guess PI (even the street) would really be the place to do that. That said, maybe I'm just really uptight, who knows!

In any case, I'm sure someone's already mentioned it, but there are various resorts that have really neat places to leave your kids for a few hours and you don't need to be staying at the resort to sign them up. I used the Cub Den at Wilderness Lodge once when my sister and I went to PI and he really enjoyed it--probably much more than he would have enjoyed PI.

Gee sounds just like what happens when you take kids to baseball games! Major league games are worse than anything I have ever seen at PI when I have been there...the language in the stands at ball games is worse too....I bet people who say they won't take their kids to PI will take them to major league games though....

You were talking about Major league games? Here I thought you may have been to a few of the LITTLE league games in our town!

We took DD17 to Pleasure Island with us this past fall. We did Adventurer's Club and Comedy Warehouse (that's all we ever do), but she wanted to see 8trax. We asked the bouncer at the door if she could go in with us. He said yes, but did remind us that it was a bar and to stay close to her. I can guarantee you that the crowd was better behaved, there was a lot less groping, etc. going on than there was at her senior prom last month.

WOW!!!! Some of you guys must have been to a totally different PI than our family goes to. Our "kids" are now 22 and 18 but they have been going with us to PI since it opened. We go a couple of times each year. Maybe we have always just hit it on really good nights. We only go to the Comedy Club and Adventurers Club but we have stayed a couple of times to see the fireworks. We have NEVER seen anything that was off color and we were, and are, pretty protective parents.
