we are taking our extended family to florida next year and one of the days will be spent at mk. i'm trying to make a list of places for my mil to rest throughout the day so we don't all wear her out. we're staying off property so it would be a pain to have to leave, and the rest of us are planning an open to close kind of day. i want her to have fun and be comfortable at same time. any suggestions are appreciated!

Hi Lori! I have a list of my dad's favorite places to rest with his eyes closed while in the Magic Kingdom. Funny I know but the FL heat can really get to him sometimes!
Carousel of Progress (Tomorrowland) - nice long rest
Tomorrowland Transit Authority/Peoplemover (Tomorrowland) - quick rest
Hall of Presidents (Liberty Square) - medium length rest

Back by Dumbo there is a nice seating area in the shade
Gaston's Tavern is a nice place to sit and cool off. There are lots of fun things to look at while there too!
If it isn't meal time Pinochio's Village Haus is fun to sit and people watch guests on It's a Small World

Hope that helps get your list started! Have fun with your extended family vacation!

The above are all great options and I would suggest the same.

Another (that involves a bit more time and energy walking to get back to the front of the park) .. is to take a boat or monorail ride to one of the nearby resorts and hang out in the lobby there. You can sit and rest, cool off, shop, eat .. and just enjoy the relative quiet (compared to the park).

All great ideas. You can also rest under the covered (shaded) viewing area at Tomorrowland Speedway. No need to wait in line to sit there, you can just go in and sit down.

There are effectively places to sit every few feet of MK, so I'm not sure it makes sense to list all the available options.

There are many park benches and every quick serve dining has tables nearby. So in one sense, you'll have no trouble finding a few spots to meet your needs.

Any of the shows are going to have seats, but they are not exactly a quiet place to relax. They are pretty much all rather loud. Waits are usually short, but some shows only run on the half hour, so guests might have to wait - STAND - up to half an hour before they can enter the theater to sit. Some shorter shows are MonstersINC, and Philarmagic (in middle of MK), but guests have to exit when the show ends.

If endurance is an issue, it might make sense to rent a scooter for the day.

Having gone to WDW with extended family, I don't mean to negate what you are trying to do, but my relatives usually just reached a point where they were done with the park, and wanted to leave for the comfort and quiet of their hotel room.

Part of it is the noise factor. Almost no matter where you go in MK, there will be noise. There's also always going to be the dreaded walk out of MK, which is going to be long if you are offsite. Another common reason they may prefer the hotel room is ahem- because the hotel has a restroom a few feet from the bed.

In my family, I also hate to add....spending time alone isn't something they were eager to do on a family vacation, especially if they are not familiar with the park Including them usually means we have to travel at a much slower pace- period. We also tend to stick more with the slower attractions. They maybe are willing to babysit a small child - as in take the small child on something like the TTA while everyone else goes on Space Mtn with their fastpass. But that often kind of marks the end of their day. I find endurance improves the more they are included in what we are doing.

So the most successful strategy we have found is to include breaks in our day. See shows often, and stop for little sit down snacks. We also pick TS places that have minimal wait. You'll also do well to avoid any doubling back.

Going over to the Grand Floridian has been one place we sometimes can take an afternoon break that is fun for everyone. It isn't quiet, because they have live musicians much of the day.(including a pianist), but it is pretty and enjoyable.

Yes, but that area has a strong odor of gasoline and loud engines! We often walk though that area quickly just to avoid the fumes.

Haven't noticed either strong odor or loud noise there, then again I just go on the ride and leave. I don't rest there (or anywhere) just noticed it was an area you could sit. One of these times I may actually sit down for more than 2 minutes, and I'll let you know....lol

What are these MK benches you speak of?

There are benches all over! We are on-the-go people so don't spend a ton of time sitting unless we're eating, but off the top of my head I remember benches by the teacups, across from the old Aloha Isle, on the bridge between the hub and Liberty Square (near sleepy hollow), in between the two Dumbo rides, and across from the Splash Mountain and BTMR entrances. Those are the ones I remember sitting on but I am sure there are more.

My father, now 71, has commented on the lack of benches at MK. We've traveled with him to WDW three of our last five visits, but I never notice because I'm always on the move. But there are spots to rest, as previous posters have mentioned.

If mobility is an issue, a scooter is always an option. My mother always gets one, due to knee troubles, and keeps our pace all day.

On the other hand, my Dad walks all day, tends to get cranky with the commotion of the parks (god love him), and needs some rest. When staying off property he has driven back to our vacation home and taken a mid-day break for 3 hours and then joined us later. It worked fine. Another time after being at the park since open, he took a cab back at 5pm and then just stayed there. He knew his limits, and we understood.

I used to think the "benchers" were crazy, complaining about a few benches disappearing ...

But now, the sad reality is now Town Hall square has no benches (ok, there are upstairs benches at the train station, and they haven't had the heart to remove the goofy statue sitting on a 2/3 of a bench by Tony's). It wasn't unusual for us to buy a popcorn, sit on a bench and enjoy the atmosphere by Town Hall before leaving... Now, it's not possible.

I guess that makes my 2014 Disneyland memory more special, because they still had benches.

Now, you feel lucky to find a backless concrete slab in Tomorrowland. Since those slabs are part of the hardscaping, they cannot be easily removed.

The pathway behind Space Mountain that connects to the railroad is nice if there are no smokers around. There are benches and shade as I recall. It is usually fairly empty because not everyone knows about the pathway.

My new favorite spot to take a break is in the gardens in the hub area now. At night they're designated for wishes viewing but during the day its a great spot to just hang out relax and soak in all the magic. :-)

the benches were all moved to the smoking area :(

I like the garden-like area around the Liberty Tree and Liberty Bell replica in Liberty Square. Speaking of Liberty Bells, the waiting area for the Liberty Belle riverboat is also a great place - lots of benches and plenty of shade. It can fill up when a cruise is about to start, but sometimes it's nice and quiet.
