Restaurants that are no more

just thought of another: Ground Round

you'd get a basket of both peanuts in the shell, as well as popcorn and you were expected to toss the shells onto the floor (early 70s)

can't remember what i ate there - just remember the peanut shells!

I use to work at a Ground Round back in NJ, that was a fun job for awhile.

I miss Jack in the Box...it was cheap and close to school for lunch breaks.

I also miss Skipper's (I think that was the name) yummy fish, shrimp baskets and great sauces.

you can still get a tostada at the taco bell's around here.

How about Godfather's Pizza?? I miss their lunch buffet.

godfathers just opened a year or so ago here.

i'd forgotten about Howard Johnsons....

fried clams on a buttered top sliced frankfurter roll - yum....

There was still a Chi-Chi's operating in Okemos, MI before we moved down to Florida 3 years ago. They always had good food unlike some of the other Chi-Chi's we went to over the years.
.

They had a huge food poisoning incident there. It closed shortly there after.

Yes, Wienerschnitzel's are still around, especially in So. Cal. & Las Vegas. I LOVE their chili dogs and chili fries!!

I thought of another one, Naugles! Our Naugles turned into Del Taco's.

As Rachele Ray would say...Yum-O
I had forgotten about those too.
There was a local window service place here that used to serve clam rolls that were just as good. I don't think it is open anymore. I'll have to ask my aunt.

ETA: a few yrs ago I really wanted good friend clams. we stopped at Shoney's about 20 miles from here on our way to Michigan. the clams were horrible.
Had them again that trip somewhere else along the way, and maybe even a 3rd time that wasn't good. Finally ended up with good clams at White Castle of all places.

Traditionally, (or so I'm told), it's a bag of fritos that has chili, cheese, onions and sour cream dumped into it and you eat it with a fork. Sonic has it in a paper basket. The state fair here calls it a 'walking taco'.

From what I've seen a frito pie is usually fritos, chili and nacho cheese sauce. Haven't had them with any other toppings, but I think Sonic might have chopped onions.
For us, walking tacos is a traditional girlscout camping dinner. It's taco meat and chocie of taco toppings placed in the bag with fritos

Burger Chef and jeff, Mr Steak, Woolworth's Department store diner, and A & W Drive Inn

I'll one up ya...I didn't know that any of the Roy's here have creamed chipped beef! :lmao: I can't remember the last time I went to Roy's. Though I did apply for a job with Plamondon a few years ago....didn't get it. :(

Kimya

That's a shocker, you'd be perfect for them! If it wasn't for the ex husband, I may have never made it over to our shared employer. Plamondon treated their managers VERY well.

Farrells
and we spent every single Sunday watching my grandma steal the banana bread from Cookie's.

Ok, now this is really a trip down memory lane! Beef Steak Charlies was like the only restaurant my dad could afford to take us to on special occasions...I remember eating there after my brother high school graduation. All you can eat shrimp! They were tiny, but hey, all you can eat! Just keep a'peelin,

Sir Walter Raliegh is another I thought of.

I must have missed that one! My parents used to love going to Beef Steak Charlies for a "parent's" night out when my brother and I were little. Then it closed.

Anyone from L.I. remember Big Barry's? DH and I really miss the Tuesday 10 cent wing night!

Remeber when Kmart had a cafeteria? I remember going there LOTS when I was a kid. Not just a nachos, hot dog place, a real cafeteria.

I remember....but not a cafeteria a lunch counter with a "soda fountain". It was awesome. This is really reaching back to the early 70's and my early childhood. Actually it wasn't called Kmart yet, it was still Kresgies (sp?). There was one in the Towson Plaza back when it was an open air shopping center (now Towson Towne Center mall) north of Baltimore. I used to love the lunch counter because they had balloons hanging over it with little pieces of paper in them. When you bought a kids meal, you were given a balloon to pop and there was a prize written on the piece of paper. (It was usually a free dessert or soda or fries, but sometimes it was a toy). I just get a happy feeling thinking about that. :)

My Dad called it Cheap Skate Charlies.

OOH Beef Steak Charlie's used to be where we would go for cheap beer in nyc when we would go to go out. $.05 pitchers. Oh and the Sangria!!! :rotfl2:
