Around here everything will be open. Then again, the demographic of the town is 90% (or higher) Jewish population.. so its more of a normal weekend than Christmas.

** restaurant requires a reservation for christmas
The last time we drove on a holiday, we packed our lunch and dinner in a cooler. We did sandwiches for lunch and cold fried chicken for dinner. Then we didn't have to hunt for a place that was open.
Is it possible for you to do that?
The only place that might open is the Waffle house in Chattanooga for sure. The Chinese place Chef Lin will be open and that is it.
P.S. There is a threat of snow and might be out luck totally. Everything shuts down wen mention snow. Go luck going over Monteagle mountain in snow one brave person.
Now it not that bad at all. You just how watch for the truckers. I have drove a lot and consider easy pie. Now in the winter time now it no way h@ll get me going over the mountain that scary. It threat of snow to good luck.

** Restaurant Requires a Reservation for Christmas
Wegmans (grocery store) is closed on Christmas. All of them throughout the company. Not sure where you're from but wanted to make note.
I work for a Shoprite chain, and Christmas day is the only day all year our stores are closed.
Shoprite, Genaurdi's will be open. I would LOVE to have Wegmans open on Saturday.
I drive by a Hooters everyday on the way to my office and their sign said that they would be open at 4. I'm not sure if that is the decision of the chain or the local store, but thought that it was interesting nonetheless.
Nothing says Christmas like Hooters! Seriously![]()
Well I am grateful that it isn't.Or else my husband or I would have to work...maybe both of us!
Just take ONE day off from visiting there....Just this one single day that we're closed (and close early on Thanksgiving but still open most of the day). You can be there bright and early on Sunday!
I understand your position. However, nothing beats the bakery at Wegmans. Why should I in essence buy a day old food to be served on Christmas when they aren't open on Christmas day?
What about that one ingedient you ran low on when you are baking the dish for relative Christmas day? Wawa does NOT carry nutmeg.. in case you are wondering. Wegmans carries nutmeg, Wegmans is also closed. I even drove over there one year HOPING for shortened hours or extended Christmas Eve hours for this elusive nutmeg.. It didn't happen. I was nutmeg-less because nothing else was open in the plaza.
The clientele in this area is 90% or over Jewish. Saturday is a very busy day--if you aren't observing the Sabbath. Most of your weekend shopping (grocery, etc) is now shot because so many things are closed. Sunday will be extra-hyper busy because of the closure.
There would be a market/need for at least limited hours on Saturday. What about the pharmacy? And the ever important liquor store... (you do need to put up with family!)
Thrilled you love the bakery - and no, you do not have to buy it and serve it day-old. You can make your own or go somewhere else that is open - it's your choice of course (of course, ours likely tastees better even day-old).
Yes, we have all gotten spoiled with 24 hour stores, but I think that for one day it is a slight inconvenience to not be open. People have gone without nutmeg for one day before or gone next door to borrow some at the last minute (wish you had tried that so you didn't have to go without!).
I do not anticipate Wegmans changing the Christmas closure day policy...ever. I could be wrong but I don't see it happening. Even though your area is one where most do not celebrate Christmas and that might even be true of the store personnel, but I can tell you that 99% of the support personnel back here in Rochester that are needed to keep that store open do celebrate this holiday.
So it is a nice, 'family friendly' policy and at Wegmans "We are a family."
Happy New Year!
Now you guys have me worried about driving during a snow storm in the south! I have experience with this as we were once stuck in Atlanta on the road when there was maybe 2 inches on the ground. I think that was around 1997 or so? We were coming back from Spring Break in Florida.
Anyway, I am thinking about taking an alternate route and going from Chicago towards Memphis on I-57 then head toward Mobile, AL mostly through Mississippi and then across the Panhandle of Florida. Does that sound like we would avoid most of the snow and mountains in the snow? Do you think its worth it? We have friends in Mobile we haven't seen in forever and it might be nice to have dinner with them or something.
Thanks,
Maggie
Honestly, the only "bad" mountain you will encounter is Monteagle. The roads around Atlanta, however, tend to shut down with any hint of snow or ice so that would be a bigger concern for me than the mountains. Memphis isn't much better about dealing with snow/ice but the terrain is a bit flatter. What would you have to go through between Chicago and Memphis though?
If you go to www.weather.com you can check your travel weather by Interstate - have you looked at that? I would honestly play it by ear and adjust your plans accordingly. Bring your GPS and a good road atlas and be prepared to take an alternate route if needed.

I looked at weather.com and it looked like if we went through Memphis, we would avoid the storm? But that was with the 5 day forecast. I think we will play it by ear on Christmas day and see what the weather shows. I have printed out 3 alternate triptiks from AAA. Plus we have the GPS. I hope to stop by the AAA office tomorrow and pick up a few maps too.
