Back from Mystic and as promised here are the places I went.
Mariner- even though it is the number one restaurant in Mystic and it is good, I was disappointed because I saw the lobster salad in customer photos on Trip Advisor and although the components were the same, it was much smaller than I had seen. Still and all it was very good my husband got the hanger steak and it was delicious. If I had to pick one it would be Via Emilia( see below).
Via Emilia- Just opened and I highly recommend the food. It is Italian but not your usual red sauce Italian. It is much more upscale.
HOWEVER, service is horrible. I do not know if they have their act together yet. We walked in with a reservation, waited to get seated because no one acknowledged us at the door...there are like 4 tables on the first floor. I was annoyed because when I walked in the waitress/bartender/hostess stuck us in a corner and I asked for the second floor. She told us there were no open tables. OK Literally two minutes later another couple walked in, no reservation and they gave them a table on the second floor. Waitstaff had many jobs and it did not seem like they were assigned to the tables. A waiter/manager/bar tender/sommelier (not sure what he did) dressed Untuck it and pants flew by the table and said be with you in a minute thanks for waiting. Did he ask me if I minded after 15 minutes? He then goes outside and proceeds to pour wine and chat with the customers outside for a good 10 min. Comes back in and then goes over to the kitchen. I did the usual trick when you are ticked with service. Rest your head on your hand with elbow on table and stare at the ceiling. Works every time!! But I should not have had to do that to get my order taken. IF you do not mind getting through all the confusion and lack of order the food is FANTASTIC. There were several other employees running around one in shorts and a tee and then one other dressed in a shirt and pants. NO name tags nothing so not sure who, what, when, where or how.
I noted that they had 88 5 star reviews on Trip Advisor and 10 5 star on Google. No one not one person noticed the horrible service( my husband who is a big tipper tipped only 15 per cent that is how bad the service was)? Not one person gave them even a 4 star review? What are the odds? No restaurant I have ever looked at had ALL 5 star reviews. Just sayn' anyone can fill in a review. Still I would definitely go there.
Kitchen Little- Great little place for breakfast, make a reservation so you can sit on the deck.
Dog Watch Cafe (Stonington)-Great place for lunch and the pizza salad is fantastic. Check out Roof Top Rosie and buy a tee shirt if you are a dog lover. 100% of the profit goes to older dogs to prevent them from being euthanized.
Needless to say a tee shirt and hat later(wanted more but they did not have it in stock) I left with some Rosie paraphernalia.
Mystic Diner- My husband loves this place, I hate it have hated it and still hate it. Waitress was the semi rude kind you expect in a diner. Sometimes that adds to the ambiance, but not for me.
Young's Buns Donuts- They opened July 27 and is owned by Adam Young the proprietor of Sift up the street. The donuts are okay. They are showy and heavy if you like that type of donut. In my opinion forego the donuts and just go to Sift.
Sift Bake Shop- As always fantastic. We got the roast beef sandwich which comes with a bag of chips. It is the size of your forearm and you can tell the ingredients are top notch and are also locally sourced. we chose to take them and have a picnic at Gilette Castle which was quiet and beautiful (in an ugly scary sort of way). I was very proud of myself at my control because we only left Sift with a sandwich, cookie and brownie!
Abbott's Lobster- I wanted to go to Ford's but in the end, all I wanted was huge hard shelled lobster with butter. My husband always brings in a sandwich from Sift bc the landlubber food at Abbotts is awful as is the fried food from Costello's down the street.
