did you eat out for thanksgiving this year? will you eat out on Christmas eve? Christmas day? new years?

just want to remind you all, in most cases, your server is sacrificing holiday time with his/her family to serve you. and generally, is not being paid any extra to do so. (the "extra" pay comes into effect because you have the opportunity to work at a busy time.. more people, people more generous with tips).

so, please, (decent service understood), dig a little deeper to give them a little something extra, for not being with their family on the holiday!!! thanks!!!

Yes, we ate out for dinner on Thanksgiving. Fire Mountain Grill in Lansing. I was really surprised the servers did nothing but take away plates. Usually they at least bring water, nope, we even had to get that ourselves. No cutlery on the tables, we had to get that ourselves as well. Napkin dispensers were on the tables, so she didn't even have to bring those.

I used to be a server and didn't necessarily feel that I was "giving up" my holiday with my family (we just celebrated at a different time) but wanted to work because I knew the money would be better. :) Not necessarily better tips, but just a lot more tables throughout the day. I, too, worked at a buffet but we brought people their drinks and refills, cutlery, etc. I was just really surprised at yesterday's dinner that the server never even brought a water pitcher or coffee pot around to give people refills. Everything was "do it yourself." We tipped 10% of the total bill, which is the norm for buffet service, but would have gladly tipped a little more for more service but since we didn't get much service, we felt 10% was adequate. My Mom paid the bill (she always takes the family out for Thanksgiving) and was going to leave a $5. We added more to it.

No restaurants (except Chinese) will be open here on Christmas Day.

Tipping should equate to the service provided. If you think you aren't being paid well for the holiday then don't work, don't beg and plead on an Internet bulletin board for holiday pity tips.

:thumbsup2:thumbsup2:thumbsup2 :thumbsup2 I always leave a little bigger tip at the hoildays (22 -25%)

I pretty much always leave 20%, and that won't change for the holidays. I'm not going to pay someone extra for doing the job he/she chose.

My wife 'n I both tip well for good service 'n we generally eat at Mom 'n Pop places where our neighbors 'n friends work, they don't complain about workin'.

I normally try to tip pretty well (as long as the service is good), so I guess I would probably tip the same whether it's just a regular day or a holiday/special day.

I figure most servers would rather work that day, then to lose out on a days wages & tips. I doubt most get paid holidays.

Lol. Very well said. I agree. If the service is outstanding, i tip well. If the service isnt great, i wont go out of my way to tip the server generously just because its a holiday.

I generally do tip more on holidays since I've never known a server who had the option of not working when scheduled on a holiday.

The restaurant where I worked it was strictly on a volunteer basis to work the holidays. She never had trouble finding people to work them, but I suppose if she did then she would have assigned people. When I first started working there I worked all the major holidays we were open which were Thanksgiving, Easter and Mother's Day. The restaurant is always closed Christmas Eve/Day and New Year's Eve/Day. But after a few years I decided I didn't want the extra money that bad, I'd rather have the day off so I stopped volunteering to work them.

boy, you guys skipped the part of my post where I said decent service understood. I am not talking about poor service, servers who don't have to do much. that was both said AND implied.
and I'm not begging on an internet board, since none of the people here will be at my restaurant:confused3

this. you usually have NO choice. (well, I guess you could quit your job and join the ranks of the unemployed). most restaurants are not doing well in this economy and thus only have a few servers period. when it is busy on holidays, they need everyone.

I am not complaining about working.. just stating a fact. we are missing out on being with our kids and grandkids on the holiday. and yes, sometimes you can work it out to get everyone together another time (although it's kinda difficult when you work weekends)

just thought it might not occur to some people and I put the thought out there. and most people DO tip extra on the holiday. and to those thanks!

again, any post that talsk about poor service doesn't fit thit particular topic. I am ONLY talking about good service.
