If you have a vacation that crosses over the first day of your use year, do you need two different reservations, so they can keep track of what's banked & what's current in each year? I know people have talked about being able to use 4 years' worth of points this way, risky as it is. I'm not looking to use that many, but just wondering if I will be making 2 separate reservations.

No, you'll only need one reservation unless you are doing a split stay between resorts or changing room size/type at the same resort. If you are using any banked or borrowed points, just be clear with them what to use first.

Several years ago, we had a vacation that entailed exactly what you're describing. We have an August use year. Our trip started in July, with the last two nights in August.

We were given a separate, linked, reservation for those two nights that fell in the next use year.

I didn't have to do anything special to get the two separate reservations. I gave MS the check-in date and number of nights. They checked availability for all nights, then did the required transactions to get the points in the right place and make the bookings. I wouldn't worry about it. It's purely administrative.
