So many threads on teachers, school absence policies and schoolwork for those of us who choose to take kids out for Disney trips - and so much worry and stress...

I thought I'd share a couple of positives...(this year we leave on 9/24 with DD(10) and DS (14 1/2)).DH passed on our first trip to WDW 5 years ago this month. Each trip back is a healing journey for me and my kids...

Told two teachers yesterday at DS' school about our upcoming trip. Yup, I was anxious.... One asked to go with us and keep an eye on DS! :thumbsup2 -( he's Asperger's and is also 3 months post-op from spinal fusion, but thatz another thread! )-

His homeroom teacher wents nuts and said she's just gotten back from OKW, FDP and went on and on about how great FD was!!!:thumbsup2

DD has brought back a couple of pins for teachers every year. On the last day of school in June, her 1st grade teacher gave her a bag with a lanyard FULL of pins - like about 20 of them - all the huge ones that will likely make her droop!! She could not believe it!!!:cool1:

So I have not yet informed DD's current teacher yet.... fingers crossed...:goodvibes

I'm so nervous about it too because we have a new principal and DD has a new teacher taht I hear is very nice, but I haven't talked to yet.

We'll see.

I only just send notes, but my sister is my "go between" if I need it, since she teaches at DS10's school.

The teacher has not called me or sent any notes home, like I asked should he have a question. Son is suppose to remind him tomorrow, so he can get a couple of days work before going (I refuse to get a week's worth of assignments).

I'm also hoping I can have enough of my pre-trip stuff done, so I can go to the Open house tomorrow night. This way I can remind teacher myself.

I don't get nervous anymore about informing the teachers. My son remains on honor roll and does make up the work (he has Asperger's too-so he work extra hard the 1st grading period-so he can do the trips). The first time his grades bomb due to this, we will not plan anymore trips during the school year.

Don't sweat it, and have fun! :thumbsup2

I'm a teacher & I'm sooo jealous that you get to go to WDW this month!!

I'll be pulling myself & kids out of school this year for our trip...but not until later this school year. Oh!!! Have fun!!!

So happy you shared positive stories. :yay: Hopefully there are many more of these stories than the others. Thanks! :thumbsup2

This is the 3rd year we've taken DD8 during school, never had any problems.

1st grade - last week before Christmas vacation. I provided the teacher with a large SASE, and she mailed us the make up work so DD could do it after the trip & before school started again.

2nd grade - surprise trip, 2 weeks Sept/Oct. I was worried about this one, due to the length & trying to keep it a secret from DD. Teacher was great, got all of the work ready ahead of time & told DD she had a "special project" for her to work on. DD completed everything the weekend before we left. She was surprised when I later told her that she had done 2 weeks of school work.

3rd grade - current. 1 week end of Sept., and 1 week close to Christmas vacation (they changed the schedule, now DD goes back to school for 2 days after we get back). Too early to tell about make up work, but the teacher asked if my parents would adopt her (my parents are taking the whole family in Dec.)

I told my DS Kindergarten teacher today and she told me to have fun and that family memories are soooo important. She also told me that the week we were going two other kids were going to be absent as well!! School is out the Thurs. and Fri. that week., so the kids are missing three days. She also told me that she is planning on using some personal days later in the year and taking her kids to WDW too!! Easy enough..........

Now, I just have to tell my DD second grade teacher. My DD already told her, but I haven't "officially" done it yet. I am so nervous about it.....

Here's something special we did FOR A TEACHER. My daughter's 4th grade teacher was going on a Disney trip with her family over Christmas break, first time. I knew this in the beginning of the year so early on I headed everyone off from buying the proverbial "teacher trinkets" and instead arranged for each student to write a special Christmas card to the teacher and all the parents went together and gave cash which I presented to her in the form of $300 worth of Disney Dollars. She was so happy she cried. Nicest thing I could ever think to do for a teacher.

I told DD's teacher at orientation and she was so excited - even more so than DD. I was going to send a note to remind her this week, but she sent home a Disney goody bag on Friday, so I guess she remembered. ;)

That's great! DD's school won't let us do stuff like that for the teachers. :confused3 But, we'll be bringing special somethings for her teacher and aide. Shhh...

I was in a panic telling my DD's 1st grade teacher esp. since during orientation she stressed that she (and the city's school system) do NOT permit family vacations during school time-they must be taken during school vacations only... she only has your child for 180 days and the other 185/186 you have them :( I looked into canceling the trip but we would lose approx. $1000 between airfare, MNSSHP tix, and the deposit on the hotel.... :( :(

THEN my DD's endocrinologist called us the 2nd day of school to let me know that she needs to go for more testing in Boston :( which will force her to miss 3 more partial days of school (one of those days the test is at 9am and Boston is brutal to get in/out of when you don't live there) so I don't expect her to be in for at least one of those days.

I was literally in tears because my younger DD (my preschooler) was so sad that she couldn't have dinner w/ Cinderella on her bday as we'd promised her after her ordeal w/ her kidneys last year :( :( :( DH refused to cancel the trip because our girls DESERVE this trip after all the appointments and tests they've had to go through.....

I went in and talked w/ the teacher and she was very supportive-said that my DD NEEDS this vacation and not to worry about it.... I then went to the principal to make sure we were all set and she too was fine :thumbsup2 once I explained everything.....

So now no more worrying about anything but the weather for our trip in 17 days!!!!

Wow! Good for you!!!!!

I have learned that life can be short and children grow quickly!!!!

Enjoy!!!
