Response time for e-mail to child's teacher?

I sent an e-mail in response to a note I received about add'l language arts support for my DS on Saturday, when the letter arrived in the mail. How much is a reasonable amount of time to wait for a response? It's not an emergency, and the e-mail went to the two support teachers listed on the letter. I don't want to be a pain, I was thinking of waiting one or two more days for a response?

Do they work Monday thru Friday? Was it requested you replied via email? If so, they may have received many requests. Is the special assistance starting on a certain date? I would probably wait until the end of the day tomorrow. If I still hadn't received a reply I would call school on Thursday to follow up. Good luck.

It doesn't specify if the teachers work M-F, but the note itself ended with the comment "if you have any questions regarding the Program, please contact your child's instructional support teacher listed below or the principal/guidance counselor at your child's school." The e-mail I wrote back just expressed my concern and if they could get back with me to discuss what is going on with my child and the expectations of this instructional support, etc. I listed my cell # and they would have my e-mail address.

I don't check my school email on the weekend, or from home at night. If someone emails me on the weekend I try to get back to them on Monday, but it depends on how many people I need to get back to (my principal overrides parents, so if he's sent emails that need responses I do them first). We also have faculty meetings every Monday, so my afternoon is shot. If you don't hear back by tomorrow, I would call.

Where I work, our email is pretty reliable and if you don't hear from the teachers tomorrow, call.

Now in the district my sons attend, their email system stinks. They don't get the emails, they go into their spam folders. All of the teacher tell us to write a note or call if you don't hear from them.

Hope this helps.

Our district email is the same way. It is AWFUL. Emails bounce back weeks later, or sometimes never. I sent an email to my DS15's English teacher today, but if I don't hear back by tomorrow at 2:30, I'm going to assume she didn't receive it.

I've always gotten a response within 24 hours (when sent during the week). Typically, I hear back by the end of the same school day.

Like others said, if you haven't heard by tomorrow, call the school.

DD12's teachers usually write back the same day, if not the next day. Her science teacher loves to call me by my first name, that is kind of weird. But whatever, they have great communication with the parents.

I am a MS teacher, and I will get back to parents the same day I receive their email. If it comes late in the day, I will get back to them the next day. If you don't hear back from them tomorrow, I would call. It could have gone into their spam folder. We did have a problem with that a while back - it was a real issue until it was fixed! :confused3

I would probably wait through the day tomorrow, then if I didn't hear anything I would send a follow up email. If I didn't hear anything by Friday I would go with the second choice on your note and contact the guidance department.

I try & respond to my parents within 24hrs. Even if its just 'I'm not sure & I'll have to check'. I teach K and I see a lot of my parents at drop-off & pickup so sometimes instead of emailing back & may touch base with them after school.

Mimi-Update:

I waited until 1 pm today but no e-mail response from either teacher. I called and left each a voice mail just as a follow-up. I'm trying to not get mad about it but I really want to know what this program entails. No call yet.

I did not let his teacher know i've sent these e-mails to the instructional support teachers, that may be my next step although it didn't mention his teacher in the note sent home, it said to contact these two teachers or the principal/guidance counselor.

Thanks for the update. I would be a little frustrated at this point as well. Try the guidance counselor. They seem more reachable via phone as the teachers are in class. Good luck.

Final Update:

I sent an e-mail message to the guidance counselor this morning (10 am) and she called me back around 1. She said she didn't want to speak on the teachers behalf why they didn't respond to me but she gave me the information I was looking for and was very polite.

I've learned the lesson that I guess I need to be the squeaky wheel in order to get anyone to respond to you. The school really shouldn't be sending these types of notes out if they don't want to deal with parents calling up asking questions about their child's education.

My kids high school teachers were required to respond within 24 hours during the week. Most check their e-mail before school, during their prep time, at lunch and after school so I don't think I ever had to wait more than a few hours for a response.

There's no required response time in our district, but as a teacher I always respond within 24 hours (during the work week).

1. It's professional.
2. I know that if I don't, many of our parents would be emailing the principal the next day. :-)
