Why do people do this? I have a few therioes, but am curious as to others thoughts. I mean whenever someone post "I didn't read the other responses but my thought/opinion is blah blah blah" it has usually already been said.

I don't read every response if it's a really long thread. I might only read the first few pages and then the last page to see where the thread is. I'm too impatient.

If it is a really long thread with many pages I don't always have time to read all the pages so might post without reading all responses. I don't think there is anything wrong with this if you state that you haven't read all the responses.

:thumbsup2 I laugh at this too. Especially when it's page 26, the Op has come back & updated several times & the poster still gives an opinion on the original post.

I know they probably just want to participate, but if it's 20 pages later & you don't want to read the whole thread, you've missed your chance! ;)

Usually because I don't want to waste time. I don't get the argument that it's been said before. When I start a post I like to see all answers, regardless of if they've been mentioned before. For many things it helps to guage importance/popularity/etc of an answer.

For instance, on the morning sickness thread, if one person mentioned ginger, I might try it if I were pregnant and sick, but if ten people mentioned it, I'd most definitely try it.

Sometimes I'm really, really opinionated and the topic is something that if reading other posts might make me think or change my mind.

So, I post what I want to say right away.

And then I go back and read everything then feel bad over what I wrote in the first place.

So to your first part, wouldn't a "I agree with the previous poster" work?

I suppose I could, or rather just quote someone, but really, what's the difference?

I tend not to read all the posts on Trip Reports and polls. Trip Reports is often personal banter between the OP and said poster, and polls they want my opinion whether its stated or not I assume so I just post:)

Otherwise I try to read the threads...

I guess I just feel that if I haven't shown others the courtesy of listening to them talk, I have not earned the right to add my comments. I see it as being just as rude as interrupting people when they are speaking. It seems like people are saying "i'm to important to listen to you, but you should listen to me."

I've never seen it that way. I guess mostly because I think the OP is the person I'm talking to - not the other posters on the thread. Interesting.

Most of the time I do read through it and I will quote and "talk to" various posters, but sometimes, especially when it's long, I'll just post and talk to the OP and answer their original question.

Time, I don't have time to read every single post. I don't get how some people spend as much time here as they do but it's a personal thing, I know. I would never criticize someone for their style of response or the 'quality' of their response unless it was a very judgemental response that was really way off base. There just isn't time to read everything here!!! I have stuff to do,lol!

I agree! When I see a post that begins with "I haven't read the other posts but..." then I skip right on by. You don't have the interest in what others have to say, then I won't give you the same respect either.

Hey we are all entitled to our peeves, right? lol

This has been very enlightening to me. I love talking with people one-on-one, but have never been big on small talk. I also don't do well with the clique threads. Hmmm...I guess this explains it.

I am guilty of both. Some times I say that I haven't read the whole thing and post anyway because what I am posting is my opinion. My opinion can be the same as someone else or completely different or someplace in between. It really doesn't matter because it is my opinion. Even if it were repeated a million times by someone else, that changes nothing.

There are also times when a OP or response strikes a nerve with me and I will feel the immediate need to respond. I do and hit the post button only to discover that there were a number of pages that I hadn't even been aware existed. Totally by accident, that one.

a lot depends on the topic of the thread. if it's a thread where people have started arguing back and forth, and have gotten completely away from the original question, i will skip past all that and post.

Thanks, I thought I was the only one.

So you don't have enough time to hear someone, but expect them to listen to you?

In short, this board doesn't require it, so I will let each topic I read to determine how much I will read and at what point I decide to respond.

I disagree that it is tantamount to interrupting. There are a number of times, where posters were actually posting at the same time. The titanic thread comes to mind. I did read all the responses and then 3 of us posted at just about the same time where we did not see each others post and we all said about the same thing.
