We travel to WDW every July, and have for the past 15+ years. We also visit DISNEY'S VERO BEACH resort each summer. The crowds in the summer, have never bothered us. Since the parks are so large, (with several to choose from), not to mention water parks and DTD...we never notice any problems. We have visited DTD during the day...and it is not too crowded. Especially in the early morning, it's nearly deserted.

By the afternoon, things begin to pick~up, and by the evening...they are in full swing! Yet, even at night, the crowds are not so noticible or troubling.
We have also enjoyed the pool areas at the resorts during the day. I noticed the people begin to arrive around 11:30 am, (probably returning from early entry to the parks), and wane again around 3:00 pm. In the late eve...they too are desolate, (guests retire to prepare for early morning). I'm sure you would enjoy a very nice time in WDW...even if you did not visit the parks.
There is enough to see/experience without ever entering a park. You could play miniature golf...take in a movie @ the AMC Pleasure Island cinema...enjoy Cirque...stroll along the Boardwalk, all around the lake while viewing illuminations...visit AKL for some shopping/dining, or viewing of the animals by moonlight w/special night vision binoculars supplied by the CM/guide (everyone is invited to do this...not just registered guests)...visit DISNEYQUEST...enjoy a SPA treatment at GF or SSR...visit AK and dine in the RFC (no park ticket necessary...it's usually much less crowded than the DTD location, and you can take a bus from/to DTD)...rent some water sprites and jet around the waterways...take the Sassagoula Express from DTD to the beautiful POR for some shopping/dining (boatwright's is fab)...take an evening spin on the monorail, sitting in the front as you cruise around the MK resorts *(finish @ the CR, where you have a wonderful choice of restaurants & shopping--you can even view the MK fireworks & Elec. Water Pagent from the splendid Cali Grill!)...take a bus back to DTD...stroll the shops and sights of Pleasure Island....visit the Peabody hotel off I-Drive (
www.peabodyhotel.com) to take in the world Famous "DUCK MARCH" (for which the hotel is noted!). This happens each day @ precisely 11:00 am, and 5:00 pm. The ducks literally march down the red carpet from the elevator (and their roof-top condo) into the lobby fountain, and back again in the afternoon! It's a hoot! We have stayed here many times, and enjoy this fun & whimsical tradition...take a drive over to nearby CELEBRATION and dine/shop or take in a movie at the quaint Downtown theater! Visit Universal Studio's City Walk! The list is truly endless...it's one GIANT playground of opportunity, so enjoy everything which is available to you and your family!
HAVE a MAGICAL TIME!!
