Resort Upgrade Questions

It seems that many folks ask for upgrades upon checking in at their resorts. Just wondering if there is a specific way to ask for this. Also, are these upgrades, when they are given, free or is there a fee for doing this? Do you have to pay the difference for the upgrade? We are staying at WL with a courtyard view. What kind of an upgrade can we ask for? Thanks!

You ask how much it would cost to upgrade your view, room, etc. When they tell you the price you need to decide if you want that or you cuold say do you have any free upgrades.

I would start with asking the cost of upgrading instead of coming out and asking for a free one.

We didn't ask at all but were told that since the resort was full and we were checking in early (rooms weren't quite ready yet) we were getting an upgrade to lakeview. It was the most beautiful view we had ever had at WDW.

As you are already staying in a Courtyard View the only upgrade would be to a deluxe room, concierge, or a suite. Most upgrades at WL are from a lower cost view to a higher cost view. Like Standard View to Woods View or Courtyard View. An upgrade from Standard to Courtyard would be at no charge, upgrades to Concierge are usually the only upgrades that may and usually do require an additional charge. But the cost usually is much lower then booking a Concierge Room Originally. Hope this is what you needed to know.

We just returned from the WL and were upgraded from a Woods View to a 1 BR Villa! When we checked in, the CM saw that we had requested a crib and said she likes to try to upgrade in that situation. She called over to the Villas and asked if they had any available. I was just shocked! I didn't ask for an upgrade, she just did it all herself.
It was a wonderful treat - two rooms, jacuzzi tub, full kitchen and a washer and dryer!

Thanks to everyone who made a post to my question. I have a better understanding of how upgrades work. Each resort seems to have their own level to which an upgrade can be made. The courtyard view at WL is already at the top (thanks Magic) so I now know what the next step up will be and a cost that would go with it. Thanks again!

I think many times these kinds of things fall in the "right place at the right time" category..

Absolutely, in all the times we've been to WDW this is the first we were ever offered an upgrade (upgrade to waterview from Std.). In my opinion now, waterview is well worth the extra $ if you are guaranteed the view we had!
