Resort sold out for our dates booked - higher chance of an upgrade?

DD & I are booked in at CSR from August 3 to 10. I just went and looked up our dates and they're completely sold out for that week. We're flying in and landing at 9:20 pm, taking Magical Express so Disney has our flight time.

I'm secretly hoping that since we'll be arriving so late, the resort being sold out and that there's only two of us we may get a magical upgrade to perhaps a deluxe. I'm not counting on it by any means, it's just nice to dream about it.

Does anyone know if they do bump you to another resort do they go mod to mod or mod to value? I've only heard of mod to deluxe in these cases.

I always worry when I arrive late that I'll end up in the room no one else wanted.
Upgrades are rare, assume you will be provided w/ a room in the view category and resort that you booked and paid for as 99.9% of people do. Arriving late, personally I would hope to get a decent location w/in that category.

We booked a standard view but I'm not picky about room location or view. I'll be happy just to be in Disney.

Your chances of being upgraded do not increase just because the rooms appear to be sold out. Nor because you are arriving late. In fact, it's not beyond the realm of possibility that you will be texted with your room number before your board your flight. As fun as it is to fantasize about it, upgrades rarely occur. When they do, it is almost always to another view within the same resort. When they switch resorts, it is never a downgrade.

Yes, but chances are much higher for short stays. Generally, 1-3 nights have greatest chance for up grades. They also usually leave some wiggle room. So sold out does not always equal upgrades. There may only be one night in the sequence that has orphan rooms so they will select the shortest stays to meet those needs.

Our hotels have been completely sold out pretty much every time we have stayed at a Disney hotel. We have received one upgrade, for one one night, in over a dozen week (or so) stays.

Exactly
Besides, just seeing there is no availability when you look for your dates online does not mean they are sold out. Disney reservation system is quirky, not that black and white. There is no telling what is actually available. You have no way of knowing, was an outsider looking in

We had an issue two years ago at Boardwalk Villas booked through renting DVC points. My magic band wasnt working correctly when we got to the front desk. I am not sure if this is why we were upgraded or not but we ended up being upgraded from a studio to a one bedroom for nine nights plus some additional fast passes.

You also have to remember that CSR is a big conference resort (I'm here now on one) and it may have a conference during your stay. So they could have a big block of rooms blocked off, and as the conference gets closer, they may release more rooms to the pubic as they adjust for the size of the conference. As another disser mentioned, that the majority of upgrades will be the view. If the resort is totally full they will give you another Mod resort, way before they move up to deluxe. We have had a decent number of upgrades and all but one was the view category within the same resort. The only time we moved up a resort level was due to construction.

At Disney your room is assigned 4-5 days out and that room will be waiting for you. Your assigned room is part of the reason it’s showing sold out. It’s not like they will give an assigned room to someone else.

Also, upgrades are always given for the hotel’s business reasons and are a very low percentage of room nights. So dream but don’t expect.

It happens occasionally. My friends were booked at Pop. I think they had 2 or 3 rooms, and they got moved to SSR because of Pop over booking. But it’s far and few between that this happens.

Yep. And with hotels, they let big travel agencies have some of the rooms, so what you're seeing on Disney's site doesn't mean there's nothing on expedia, priceline, hotels dot com, etc etc etc.

I would guess that your band didn't work *because* you'd been upgraded.

Hi this is what has happened to us. We arrived very late one time and we got the worse room/view possible. When I asked about any other rooms they said this was the last one. I will not arrive late at a hotel/resort again for that reason.

Ack! That’s the thing about upgrades. An upgrade to one person may not be considered an upgrade to someone else. I’d rather stay at Pop then be sent to SSR.

This has happened to us on a few occasions. While not ideal, we were able to switch to another room the next day.

What made it worst? Did you ask about changing later in the trip? Availability changes daily.

THIS. I have over 60 stays on property in 12 years. I've had TWO upgrades to preferred rooms. That is IT. And yes, as always nowadays, the resort was fully booked.

I like to think that the pre-assigned room stays that way these days. In the past the front desk could shuffle rooms up until you showed up. I like to think it's rarer to do that now w/ pre-assignment and the ability to bypass the front desk, but I'm not so sure.
Last Dec. I had 3 room changes texted to me - all of which popped up on my phone when my plane landed. I'd booked a 1 br. villa and the first assigned was a regular hotel room, the second was at the wrong resort (Kidani rather than Jambo,) the last was what I had booked. I'm not sure what triggered all of those changes while I was flying to WDW, but assume it was the front desk causing a cascade effect by making a day of change for some one.
