How good are the resorts at giving you what you request? I'm staying at POR. I requested a ground floor, near the parking lot and we need a trundle bed. I can walk short distances but I can't do stairs or very long walks. I am bringing my own wheelchair and I would like to to keep it in my truck overnight so it won't take up alot of space in the already too small for 5 people room!

Does anyone have any experience with this? I specifically told them I did NOT want a handicapped accessible room. I don't want to take it from someone who really needs it. I just hope they listen!!

Thanks,
Kimba

All of the resorts except Caribbean Bach and most of Old Key West have elevators for all the buildings.

Does your confirmation indicate on it that the requests are for medical needs? If yes these are a higher priority for room assignment. Another thing you can do is call the number on your reservation four days prior to arrival and ask to speak to the "rooms assigner" and explain the situation to them. That is the person who actually decides what room you will be getting. The reservations actually show up in the Resort's computer system five days prior to arrival.

Last month at POFQ, I requested to be close to food court and buses because I was travelling alone. I was in a room next to parking--not close at all.

One day, I decided to park my ecv outside and use my crutch to go into a regular restroom. When I came out, some children were jumping off the seat! Their parents were just watching them! They evidently did something, because the power on the ecv was somehow drained (I had the key with me--don't ask me how it happened) It was really touch and go getting back to the resort. I didn't even have enough power to get on the ramp of the bus and getting back to my room was a nightmare!

Fortunately, it recharged okay and I didn't have any more problems--but I never left it again!

In hindsight, I guess I should have been more proactive about requesting a room change at check-in, but I'm really not a confrontational person. However, lesson learned!

Tell them the first floor is for medical needs - those are assigned first before people with the same request for 'non-medical' reasons.
Put your requests in order of priority to you. Room assigner CMs have posted on the boards that they do try to meet at least one of the requests people have and try to fill the first one listed if they can since they assume whatever was listed first was most important to the guest.

Here is a link to the POR resort map.If you look it over ahead of time, it will help you to figure out which areas you are most interested in, which will help during check in.

One thing to keep in mind is that sometimes one of your requests (like near to parking) may be the totally opposite place to one of your other requests (like close to the food court). I don't know where the trundle bed rooms are, but from what I remember, they are not all over the resort, but just in some specific areas. Each request you make means some of the rooms that are available won't meet that next request. For example, there might be a lot of trundle beds, but not all are on the first floor. Of those on the first floor, not all are close to parking and of those trundle bed rooms that are close to parking, not all are close to the Food Court. Taking all the requests into account, there may be only a few rooms that meet all your requests and if they are already full when you get there, there won't be one left for you.

You mentioned that you are hoping to keep your wheelchair in the car trunk. If you don't have a room close enough to parking, I'd suggest you bring it into the room and keep it folded (I assume it folds or you would not be able to put it in the trunk). We have stayed at POR with DD's wheelchair in a regular room. We just did some moving around of the furniture (table and chairs) to make a storage space for it. She is not able to walk, so did need to be able to get around the room with it. It was a bit tight, but we managed.
You could also use it to get to/from the room and then have another member of your party take it back to the car for storage.

Since you don't need the features of the fully wheelchair accessible room, you probably don't want one. The room is the same size as a 'regular' room. In order to make the bathroom wheelchair accessible with a roll in shower, they change the placement of the wall dividing the bathroom from the sleeping area, making the sleeping area smaller and the bathroom bigger. This also means that many of those rooms have a single king sized bed - that's the size of bed that fits and still has room for diving around.

Thanks Everyone!

I did tell them it was for medical reasons. Actually I only made 2 requests - ground floor and near parking lot so I guess I'm alright. I didn't want to make to many special requests.

I think I will call at 4 days out just to be sure I get what I need.

Thanks Again!!

All of the resorts except Caribbean Bach and most of Old Key West have elevators for all the buildings.

I was under the impression that the Alligator Bayou buildings, where the trundle beds are located at POR, have no elevators. I know the mansion section has elevators but I didn't think the AB section did. I am staying at POR in October and have requested a lst floor or building with an elevator because I will have an ECV. I figured I'd probably be placed in the mansion section because of that.

You are correct about the elevators.
Buildings in Alligator Bayou are only 2 stories high and are not required to have elevators. The Mansion Buildings are 3 stories and do have elevators.

I believe (but am not positive) that only the AB area has trundle beds.

Yes, all the trundle bed rooms at POR are in the AB section, which is two floors and does not have elevators.

I called POR today and asked to speak with the room assigner and the CM I spoke with wouldn't let me.

She said anything I need should be noted on my reservation so she transferred me to reservations so I could check.

So I did. I went through "it" all again with this person. She said the only thing noted was "prefer ground floor". Uh - hello!! Prefer??? Necessary!!!

Should I be worried? I am!! Hopefully everything will be ok!!
I guess I'll find out Friday:headache:
