Normally you should park at the last major place you will be, but rules for parking at resorts vary, sometimes on a day to day or even hour by hour basis, according to anticipated crowds.
It is common to be given a three hour parking pass. On some days even residents of other resorts may not park at all at Polynesian or Contemporary unless they have a reservation at a restaurant inside..
Boardwalk has (or had @ 1999) four parking areas, a general parking area just inside the south exit, a general parking across the street from the northeast exit, a valet parking area, and an area for resort residents. The length of time you are allowed to stay may vary with each of these lots. The general parking areas tend to be full in the evenings. If you get there early, tell the gatekeeper you are visiting, he may point you to a general parking area where you may leave the car there all day, unless he or signs say otherwise.
I believe you have to go to Pleasure Island to transfer to a bus back to PO Riverside, and make the transfer there before 2AM.
